This page has been created in hope of saving lives, safety & knowledge! My name is Kirsten Spink, I am Tyler Lee Spinks older sister.

As many already know my brother, has been missing since Labor Day, 9/5/2016. Tyler and a close friend began the day with a trip down river at approximately 12:00 noon. They floated down the Platte River for around 2 hours until they stopped on the beach only a couple hundred feet from the opening into Lake Michigan. They decided they wanted to continue to kayak so they put back in near the boat la

‼️

Regardless of what sport you love or play this summer, the all kids should learn is swimming and water competency.

Drowning is the number one killer of toddlers in America, which means water competency is more than just a sport; it's a vital survival skill.

Our campaign has one goal, encouraging parents and caregivers everywhere to consider swimming and water competency the first priority before enrolling their kids in other extra curricular activities.

GREAT INFORMATION TO PASS ALONG ‼️

This is a great safety guide for children swimming in lakes and swimming pools. The color of the bathing suit can make it easier or more difficult to see children while they are swimming. This is a good reminder to always have adult supervision when children are swimming. (Thanks to Praire Lakes Healthcare System.)

06/15/2024

Supervision is essential when children are playing in water, whether at splash pads or in smaller inflatable kiddie pools.

While these environments seem safer due to their shallow water, they still pose significant risks. Drowning happens quickly and silently, even in just an inch of water.

Active supervision can prevent accidents and ensure a safer environment. Here are a few key points to remember:

1. Always be within arm's reach. Drowning happens quickly and silently.

2. Be aware of unexpected hazards like slippery surfaces, sudden water jets, and crowded conditions. Slippery surfaces can lead to quick falls, and your proximity can prevent injuries.

3. Kids can get dehydrated playing in the sun. Ensure they take breaks and drink water.

4. Establish clear rules about safe play areas and behavior. Ensure they understand not to run, push, or engage in rough play.

5. As most drownings happen during non-swim times, always empty inflatable kiddie pools after use and store them upside down or out of children's reach.

Stay alert and engaged!

This Autism Awareness Month, we're bringing critical attention to the intersection of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and water safety.

According to the Autism Society of Florida children with ASD are 160 times more likely to die from drowning compared to their neurotypical peers.

This staggering statistic highlights the urgent need for inclusive and adapted water safety programs. Tailoring swimming lessons to accommodate the unique challenges and abilities faced by those with ASD can create a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy water activities.

By promoting awareness and taking action, we can significantly reduce these risks and ensure that water safety is accessible to all, regardless of their abilities.

Let's commit to fostering a culture of inclusivity and protection around water, ensuring a safer space for individuals with ASD to learn, play, and thrive.

In the past I have kept my post focused on helping to prevent drownings through education. Tonight I need to share a post about something completely different but just as important! A friend of my son’s passed away recently from a drug overdose. Unfortunately, this is such a widespread problem that hit many families. The more we share and open up, who knows maybe the better and easier it could be for someone to feel comfortable enough to share, get help and never stop getting help! Who knows, maybe our society might actually do more to help in this epidemic?

When a young child suddenly goes missing, always remember to check the water first.

An alarming 69% of young children who have drowned or been found submerged in swimming pools were initially not expected to be in or around the pool area.

This stark statistic highlights the silent, often unexpected nature of drowning risks.

Whether it's a pool, bathtub, or any body of water, immediate action is crucial. This is why the 5 Layers of Protection are a vital part of protecting your loved ones.

January is National Bath Safety Month, a crucial time to highlight and address the often overlooked risks associated with bath time.

Alarmingly, ⅔ of in-home drownings occur in the bathtub, a statistic that underscores the need for increased awareness and preventative measures to ensure the safety of our loved ones, particularly the most vulnerable, our children..

This month serves as a reminder to all of us, especially parents and caregivers, to take proactive steps to prevent these tragic incidents.

Simple yet effective practices like never leaving children unattended in the bath, using non-slip mats, and keeping water levels minimal can make a significant difference.

How to spot a rip.

Unfortunately, in this pic, it's actually where it looks the safest to enter the sea.
This is because the rip current is looping around and pulling back out hence it looks calm with no waves rolling to the shoreline.
Never enter the water here.

If you are already in the sea and get caught in the rip current ( you'll know because you will suddenly be moved from your location and it will be impossible to swim against it) , do not panic or fight against it.

Float and don't fight it, just float on your back or whatever to wherever the rip takes you.
Rips generally only go as far as the last breaking waves in the distance

No doubt you probably would have heard the term "swim between the flags".
Surf lifesaving New Zealand recommends swimming between the flags, and they do this because this means that stretch of water is being monitored by lifeguards. however if you do get caught in a rip, wave out and they'll come and get ya.

If you are on an isolated beach, once the rip subsides just swim parallel to the beach and make your way in.

Pier Pressure 11/10/2023

Pier Pressure Lane Frame was visiting the Great Lakes for the first time. It was a windy day and the water was rough, but Lane and his brothers headed onto a pier to see a lighthouse. Then a wave crashed over the breakwall and pushed him into the water. Lane drowned, but maybe it didn’t have to be that way.
