A neurodiversity-affirming view of social skills 👇

Traditional social skills often focus on neurotypical norms—like making eye contact or moderating voice volume. But for autistic individuals, these can sometimes feel uncomfortable and even miss the mark. Among today's influential figures are remarkable autistic individuals like Sir Anthony Hopkins, who are making a significant impact.

Sir Anthony Hopkins (b. 1937) is a two-time Academy Award and Primetime Emmy-winning actor known for roles in films like The Silence of the Lambs, Legends of the Fall, Westworld, and The Father. He revealed his Asperger’s diagnosis in 2014 at age 77, describing it as a gift that fuels his obsessive work ethic. His unique perspective allows him to deconstruct characters in ways that resonate globally.

Since his time at TQS, Matthew has become an assistant professor of oyster restoration ecology at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. He fondly recalls his days at TQS, enjoying woodshop, ice skating, and recess with friends.

Some of today's most influential figures are outstanding autistic individuals, like Temple Grandin.

Temple is an animal behaviorist, author, and autism advocate. Misdiagnosed with brain damage at age two, her mother sought help from leading special needs researchers and started Temple’s speech therapy, which transformed her life. Despite school challenges, she became an expert in livestock handling and a humane treatment advocate. She earned her doctorate in 1989 and uses her platform to raise autism awareness and advocate for early intervention.

Her life inspired the award-winning film "Temple Grandin," and in 2010, she was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people.
