Movement has always been a part of my life, and I would scale walls and swing from monkey bars. I would play tag with my brother and sister.

Movement was carefree and joyful. But, over the years, movement has taken on different meanings. It’s become a way to manage my mental health rather than just a way to have fun. After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and anxiety, I began to see the importance of movement in my life. It wasn’t just something I did for fun, it was something that helped to keep me stable.

Now, as an adult, I still find joy in movement, but it also serves as a tool to help me manage my mental illness. Whether I’m going for a run, taking a dance class, or even just going for a walk around the block, movement helps me to feel grounded and present. In a world that can often feel overwhelming, urban hiking provides me with a sense of adventure and a chance to explore my surroundings in a new way.

It’s a way to connect with the world while caring for myself.

Bipolar. Anxiety. Depression. Three words, for many people, are synonymous with mental illness. For too long, mental illness has been shrouded in stigma and secrecy, but thankfully that is starting to change. One of the most promising new treatments for mental illness is exercise.

That's right, something as simple as going for a walk or a bike ride can have a profound impact on mental health.

Movement has been shown to be especially helpful for people with bipolar disorder and anxiety. It can help to regulate mood and prevent the onset of manic episodes.

For people with anxiety, exercise can help to ease symptoms and promote a sense of wellbeing. And for people with depression, exercise can be an effective way to take back control and improve mood. Of course, exercise isn't a cure-all, but it is an essential step in the journey to recovery.

I wanna DANCE!!

There's something about dancing that makes you feel good. No matter where you are or what you're doing, getting up and moving to the music can improve your mood.

That's why so many people love taking dance classes - it's a great way to exercise while having fun. But did you know that dancing can also be a great way to improve your mental health?

A recent study from UCLA Health found that Conscious dance, which encourages self-discovery through unchoreographed movement, produced mental health benefits among the vast majority of participants with depression, anxiety, or a history of trauma.

So, if you're feeling down and need a boost, consider putting on your favorite song, hit up the closest space, and have some fun. Not only will you have a blast, but you'll also be doing your mind and body some good.

Mental health is something that we all have, and it is important to pay attention to. Mental illness, however, is something that tragically 1 in 5 people will suffer from in their lifetimes. Mental illness can take on many different forms, such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and more. Too often, mental illness is seen as taboo and people suffering from mental illness are made to feel ashamed. This should not be the case. Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and it is important to seek help if you are suffering. Walking is one way that you can help boost your mood and improve your mental health. Walking increases blood flow and blood circulation to the brain and body, which has a positive influence on your HPA axis. The HPA axis is responsible for your stress response, so by walking you are helping to reduce stress. In addition, walking is a form of movement, and movement has been shown to be beneficial for mental health. So get up and go for a walk! It just might be the boost that you need.
