This #womenwednesday the spotlight is on the marvelous Swiss artist Katja Loher and her mesmerizing diamond sculptures! #shinebrightlikeadiamond . Loher gives us an insight into her wondrous journey while creating the videos for these extraordinary sculptures: . First video - "Earth Diamond": "This piece started to evolve during the House Collective Art Program in China. You can see elements of each station of this journey…Then it became a global piece, as the journey continued to Colombia, where I focused on capturing nature during quarantine… and then it continued in the Swiss mountains." . By collaborating with local artists and engaging with each city’s geography and local culture, Loher gained a new understanding of the classical Chinese Five Elements theory that she projected in her Videoplanets. . In Beijing, Loher collaborated with local choreographers and dancers, in Hong Kong with Feng Shui Designer Thierry Chow, in Shanghai with the street fashion collective Dirty Pineapple, and in Chengdu with Chinese Ink painters Ma Yong and Wu Hao. . Second video (view in gallery) - "Floating Diamond": "This piece is inspired by the metamorphosis. A butterfly that comes out of a cocoon. And when she gazes up we can see her human eyes." . The diamond sculptures, through their multifaceted perspective, reveal videos that are embedded within their transparent structure. They are a three-dimensional manifestation of kaleidoscopic multiplication of @katjaloher 's bird’s eye view of choreographed dance concepts, and symbolize the alternative dimension where past, present, and future converge. . We are celebrating this #womenwednesday with Dutch artist Hedwige Jacobs’s most recent work—“Excuse Me”, sent to us all the way from Jakarta. Although Jacobs is socially distanced 10,253 miles from us, the crowd here clearly doesn’t get the memo! . Hedwige’s hand-drawn animation is one example of the many pieces she has created to display the vastness of humanity and overconsumption, aided by her experience of now living in the cramped city of Jakarta. To learn more about Jacobs, the exhibition, and her body of work check out her Artist’s page on our website and inquire about available works! . . . We have fabulous news for all art lovers, science nerds, and science fiction fanatics - we have extended Houston based artist Neva Mikulicz’s remarkable exhibition “Declassified” until Saturday, January 8❗️ . Don’t miss your chance to uncover the secrets in this “out of this world” exhibit and Interact with the artist’s hyper-realistic, witty drawings that are paired with new media, such as: LED lights, light projection, sound recordings, and archival videos. Take sight of Flying Saucers, make a stop at Buc-ee’s, watch a T-rex slurping from a Whataburger cup! . . "UFOs, robots, and monsters both prehistoric and imagined are recurring subjects in Mikulicz’s artwork, which radiates with a 1950s “vintage-y” vibe, the decade when the automobile, rock’n’roll and television took hold of the country’s collective imagination...Some drawings mirror the look of our world as it is photographed and disseminated by handheld consumer gizmos, while other works are composed like panels in a graphic novel, a medium that many contemporary fine artists find inspiring. One features a T-Rex chasing an iconic orange-and-white-striped Whataburger cup..For those who feel a sense of humor is absent in about 99 percent of all contemporary art, Declassified will feel like a breath of fresh air.” - @houstoncitybook , @beckeresque . . . . . #nevamikulicz @nevamikulicz #anyatishgallery #lastchancetosee #declassified #animateddrawings #sciencefictionart #whataburger @thewmoa #houstonartscene #houstonartgalleries #houstonbasedartist #contemporarydrawings

Hello fellow Texans, let’s face it - Buc-ee’s is a pit stop must when we see one! Whether it's the super clean restrooms, homemade fudge, beef jerky, or beaver nuggets - the favorite of Houston-based artist Neva Mikulicz - we all stop to fulfill our road trip cravings. This insanely intricate drawing by Mikulicz, was inspired by her last road trip when she saw a cloud in the sky and thought “huh, what if that was a flying saucer?” Her creative imagination coupled with her innovative use of technology (like the colorful blinking LED light above) thwarts the static nature of the oldest medium (drawing) into something more evolved and amusing to the viewer. . How many times do you stop at a Buc-ee's when you are on a road trip? . Neva Mikulicz, “Declassified” is on view until January 5, 2022. . . . . . #nevamikulicz #anyatishgallery #bucees #multimediart #declassified #houstonartscene #contemporarydrawing #houstonbasedartist #houstonartgalleries #texasstaple

OPENING TODAY! NEVA MIKULICZ: “DECLASSIFIED” . Saturday, December 4, 12 – 5 pm . Anya Tish Gallery is delighted to present the complex and witty works of Neva Mikulicz in Declassified, the gallery’s fourth solo exhibition of the Houston-based artist. Mikulicz is widely recognized for her excruciatingly detailed, hyper-realistic drawings in Prismacolor pencil and graphite. In her current body of work, Mikulicz marries the traditional, centuries old medium of drawing with new media, such as: LED lights, light projection, sound recordings, and archival videos. . Mikulicz embraces the unconventional pairing of elements from mass culture along with personal characteristics that derive from her memory and sense of humor, referencing retro sci-fi, pop culture and vintage governmental footage. The amusing, obsessively complex works open a compelling dialogue questioning the relationships between mass media, science, and the polarized content, alluding to buoyant evocations of 21st-century America. . . . . . Video: @nevamikulicz “It’s Alive!” 2021, Projection of animated drawings, site-specific installation . . . . . #openingtoday #anyatishgallery #nevamikulicz #houstonartscene #declassified #hyperrealisticdrawings #multimediaexhibition #houstonbasedartist #contemporaryfigurativeart
