We are throwing it back this Thursday with Marfa-based artist, ! Born and raised in rural Northwest Ohio, Ann Marie Nafziger moved to Marfa, Texas, over 20 years ago, where she was instantly inspired by the iconic western scenery. Nafziger’s gestural and vibrant paintings are reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe’s abstracted landscapes of the Midwest, exploring similar ideas such as the interconnectedness of nature and immersive encounters one may have with the nonhuman world. Placed in the realm of American Modernism, Nafziger’s work is a love letter to nature, complex and alluring; these works embody the sublimity of the natural phenomena. So, if you want to spend some time outside without the Texas heat, visit the gallery today to view stunning paintings!

For we are highlighting ceramicist (Josephine Diehl) ! Diehl is one of the talented artists in our upcoming pop-up exhibition, “Short and Sweet”, opening Friday, August 9, 6-8 pm! Diehl will show a variety of pots from Denmark that were all fired in a Japanese style wood-fired kiln. The artists states, “the special part about these pots is that nothing was added to the surface. The iron rich clay body, combined with the flame path of the kiln, and cooling reduction of the kiln has created at some parts- bright shimmery purples, and hues of orange. The process of firing these works from start to finish is around 32 hours and takes a team of 3.” Stay tuned to find out more about the other amazing artists in this upcoming exhibition!

For my last I would like to share my favorite artist and talk a little about the incredible experience I have had working at !! When I walked into the gallery for the first time, exhilarating oil on canvas painting, “Amore Mio,” instantly caught my eye! This flavorful piece drew me in and sparked my exploration of Koustov’s artistic style. Koustov’s paintings feel like a burst of happiness within a meadow of exuberant colors, textures, and layers. The hues and intriguing textures pop out from the canvas, demanding the viewer’s attention to take a step closer and appreciate the lively outburst of such an emotive dynamic.

Working as a summer intern for Anya Tish Gallery has felt like a true honor! I have loved learning about gallery curation, lighting, social media, and so much more! This August I will return to Tulane University for my second year of undergrad and I am so grateful to take my new knowledge and experience of gallery operation with me!!

We are very delighted to share this recently completed commissioned thread painting by Korean artist ! This luscious and mouthwatering painting is now in its new home in Florida! intricate manipulation of materials highlights her ability to challenge the traditional model of what a painting should be - brushstrokes become thread and the flat surface is liberated to breathe into three-dimensional space. The artist is open for commissions and has made a plethora of happy collectors who have acquired her highly desired artworks through the commission process. Visit the gallery today to view Kim’s striking work in person, as an image truly does not do justice to the exquisite detail, ex*****on, and thoughtful dimensionality in Kim’s work!

Brighten up your home with everlasting whimsy and summer fun by adding a inflated steel pool float to your art collection! Although this piece can be installed outside right next to your pool, we do not recommend floating on it!!! William Cannings is a master of the elements; he contorts metal alloy into soft folds and alluring curves that dazzle us with bright, saturated, and irresistibly engaging shapes. His work invokes a sense of wit by using hard steel to create “soft” subjects that look like they were made of malleable plastic. The artist then coats the pneumatic configurations in slick automotive paint before installing the work in such a way that it seems to defy gravity.

We just love artwork that surprises us. Like this enigmatic painting, 3C2E, by Budapest based artist Arpád Forgó. This intriguing acrylic painting is a meticulously shaped canvas that emphasizes the rhythmic interplay of planar and spatial relationships. This fluid dynamic between the whole and the segment is the crux to Forgó’s sophisticated artistic practice. Each panel distills to its elemental components - form and color - creating a distinct dimensional structure that preserves the material’s intrinsic integrity and beauty. Forgó expresses interest in “the relationship between one and several, the issue of cardinality, oneness, unity and division.” Challenging our perception of how we observe and uncover the physical dimensions in his work.

Letter from the Director, Dawn Ohmer:
For over five years, I had the immense privilege of working with Anya Tish. She was not just a mentor; she became my friend, my confidant, my family. We spoke almost every day since I began working at Anya Tish Gallery (needless to say) we became to know each other so very well that at times we could easily read each other’s mind. The idea of the gallery moving forward without her feels unfathomable, yet if there’s one word that epitomizes Anya, it’s “resilient.” She embodied strength in every circumstance to continuously keep the gallery thriving. Anya loved and believed in our artists; her passion lay not only in art, but in the very people that she surrounded herself with. Therefore, I am committed to preserving Anya’s legacy for as long as I can as she instilled in me a profound love for our artists and an unwavering dedication to their work. Anya’s impact transcended the Houston art scene; it resonated globally. In order to honor her memory, we ask for your continuing support for Anya Tish Gallery, allowing her spirit to endure and inspire.

It is with profound sorrow that we share with you the sudden passing of our cherished Gallery owner, Anya Tish, who died the morning of Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in her hometown of Kraków, Poland with her husband of over 50 years, Mark Tish, by her side. Anya was a beacon of the Houston art scene, mentoring and exhibiting local, regional, and international artists, as well as sharing her vast knowledge and love of art with numerous gallery patrons, collectors, and art enthusiasts. Anya Tish Gallery is continuing to move forward with her spirit guiding us. We humbly ask for your understanding and consideration for the privacy of her loved ones during this difficult time. As we gather more information, we will share updates regarding a future memorial service.

We are delighted to share another stunning new painting by Houston-based artist .warren1 ! Warren’s overarching interest to construct these intriguingly barren landscapes lies in her desire to present “liminal spaces - in-between, transitional spaces and states of mind.” To be in a liminal space means to be on the precipice of something new but not quite there yet. We think .warren1 is on the precipice of something truly great with her new series. Stay tuned for additional paintings or inquire with the gallery today!

My name is Alyssa Reyna and I’m one of the summer interns at Anya Tish Gallery! I recently graduated from the University of Houston with my Bachelor’s in Fine Arts and this fall I’m happy to announce that I’ll be returning back to UH to pursue my Masters Arts Leadership. I’m a full time mixed media artist ( ), who enjoys learning about my Mexican culture through art and history and exploring different ways to serve my community. You can find me helping kids with scholarship applications and in church volunteering for community projects and events.
For my I chose “Lovely One” by Polish photographer Natalia Wiernick (.wiernik ). As a Mexican American, I was internally drawn to this particular work, as the flowers utilized in the piece reminded me of the flowers used in traditional folklórico embroidery. Additionally, the photo plays with elements of intimidation and whimsy by pairing the central figure’s stoic expression with floral accents. The continuous use of a red and black pallet throughout the piece adds a sense of cohesiveness and intrigue, making this work truly a feast for the eyes.

Here is some ✨ from Polish artist - one of the four incredible artists in our current exhibition, “The Fourth Dimension”, on view until June 29!
“Art is part of our being, and being is part of nature, which we recognize with the help of mathematical methods (in the sense that art is mathematical in its structure, as it organizes planes and space). In the pursuit of ‘creative perfection’, consciousness suggests that the notion of perfecting ideas and construction, same as any perfection, exists only in the imagination. There is no straight line, nor is there an ideal square. Perhaps, then, perfection lies in imperfection, and perhaps one should search for the “ideal straightness” where everything is curved, where the bark marks the straightness of the trunk, where there are only vertical horizons. In the rhythm of living geometry, one searches for the poetry of words transforming them into names.” - George Grochocki

Opening Friday, July 12, 6-8 pm, a pop-up solo exhibition by , The “I” in Immigration! The highly textural, multi-media paintings in this exhibition explore Escallón’s personal experience of immigration by reflecting deeply on various aspects of her identity as a woman living between contrasting cultures. A significant component of Escallón’s identity is intertwined with the historic colonial architectural structures of Bogotá, Colombia. These architectural forms boast organic roofs characterized by dynamic lines, serving as an endless wellspring of vital inspiration for the artist’s creative pursuits and as a platform for fostering discussions about immigration.

Our on this rainy day in is a work by Houston-based artist ! Drawing on the history of both quilting and painting, the Martinez’s hand-stitched fabric paintings are created from clothing found in the streets of Houston on the artist’s travels throughout the city. The paintings record the traces of global capital, evoking those who dyed and printed the fabric, those who assembled the garments, the people who wore and lost them, as well as the artist who places them back into circulation as luxury objects. They are an invitation for the viewer to consider not only their formal composition and the laborious nature of their production, but also the disjunctive economies that enable such value shifts.
