Why You Stress Eat and How To Stop 11/14/2023

Stress Eating - What to do??
One of the very common coping skills we have is reaching out to high-calorie food when under stressed. Stressed eating causes chemical and emotional reaction to the brain, which make us feel better. But research has shown that better feeling only last for 3–4 minutes, but extra calories we consume takes hours or days to burn. Frequently engaging in this behavior led to weight gain and subsequently more stress.
Few-tips to overcome emotional/stress eating
–mindfulness technique practice
–Developing better coping skills –engaging in different behavior, whenever under stress
–Deep breathing technique, etc.

Why You Stress Eat and How To Stop A psychologist shares recommendations for putting an end to your stress eating once and for all.

We're only just beginning to learn how Covid-19 affects the brain 07/31/2020

Know the COVID------
New findings are adding to our knowledge of the effect of COVID-19 in the brain and neuropsychological symptoms. The two possible hypotheses for brain involvement include 1. direct damage to the brain tissue and 2.binding of the COVID-19 virus to brain ACE-2 receptors causing an exaggerated immune response.

Neurological and neuropsychological symptoms can range from headache, dizziness, loss of smell and taste to confusion, loss of consciousness, delirium, seizure, stroke, and even paralysis.

We're only just beginning to learn how Covid-19 affects the brain One of the more puzzling aspects of the novel coronavirus is just how many organ systems are impacted through the course of the disease. We've heard about the heart, lungs and respiratory symptoms, but a growing mystery is its impact on the nervous system.

Could your diet be affecting your mental wellbeing? 07/18/2020

DIET AND MENTAL HEALTH

"You are what you eat" is not only true for physical health but also for mental health. Fluctuation in blood sugar levels is related to our emotional feeling. Low blood sugar levels can lead to fatigue, irritability, anxiety, and depression. Some people crave comfort food when they are depressed, as high blood sugar levels soothe our brain.

Numerous researches have shown the harmful effects of highly processed foods and high sugar-containing carbonated soft drinks. At the cognitive level, most of us know that the processed and high sugar foods are not suitable for us, but the connection between gut and brain is so strong that we end up consuming them anyway.

Proper hydration is as crucial as a healthy diet. Drinking less water also affects mental health. Emotional symptoms worsen, and cognitive function declines when someone ignores the recommendation of adequate daily water consumption. Confusion, irritability, fatigue are some of the effects of dehydration. Not only this, but the brain confuses a lack of water to lack of food. As a result, one ends up eating when actually they are thirsty.

To achieve holistic health, a healthy, wholesome diet with proper hydration is essential. A diet that is high in whole-grains, proteins, vegetables, fruits, fish, and olive oil has been proven good for mental health. Educating oneself with the right dietary choices can go a long way not only for oneself but also for the whole family.

At Greater Heights Holistic Psychiatry, we educate people about making the right dietary choices.
