Our Story
LEON’S LOUNGE, founded by Leon Yarborough , in 1947 retains the distinction of being Houston’s Oldest Bar and has been a favorite of Houston drinkers for decades as it has years of history within its walls , continuously operating at it’s original location at 1006 McGowen. It’s narrow entry features a long mahagony antique bar, stained glass, and chandeliers. Walking into Leon’s takes you back in time for it is filled with nostalgic charm.
After returning to Texas from serving in WW II with General Chenault’s 14th AAF/ Flying Tigers unit stationed in Kun Ming China, Leon moved into Apt 1 of the still existing Sheridan Apartments located down the street on McGowen . He loved playing cards up the street at 1006 McGowen.
It was said that Leon was so good at gambling and playing cards that he was able to raise money to buy the bar. In fact, in those days he was known as ,...
.“The MAYOR of McGOWEN”!.. History has it, Leon met his wife, Barbara, when she had heard a man cashed paychecks at his bar and within months the couple married at the original Second Baptist Church across the street where he resided as a bachelor, and Leon ultimately met his death in his car in 1990 on McGowen .... he met his wife, married, and died ...all on the street, ....rightfully deserving the title.
