Trinity Health Grand Rapids, formerly Mercy Health St. Maryโs, has agreed to pay $50,000 to settle a religious discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The hospital unlawfully rescinded a job offer to an applicant who, for religious reasons, refused a flu vaccine.
The EEOC argued that Trinity Health violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by denying the applicant's request for a religious exemption and rescinding the job offer. Trinity Health's influenza policy, now rescinded, required employees to get an annual flu shot unless granted an exemption.
In response to the settlement:
Trinity Health will pay $50,000 and provide other relief.
The hospital is enjoined from discriminating based on religious beliefs against flu vaccination.
Human resources and senior leadership will receive training on Title VIIโs religious protections.

Walmart has agreed to pay $60,000 and take corrective actions to settle a s*x discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). ๐๏ธ The lawsuit accused Walmart of engaging in unlawful s*x stereotyping against a woman with young children at its Ottumwa, Iowa store.
According to the EEOC, Walmart refused to promote the employee based on stereotypes about women with young children, assuming she wasn't interested in advancing her career long-term. ๐คฐ๐ฉโ๐ผ This violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits s*x discrimination, including discrimination based on s*x-based stereotypes.
The court rejected Walmart's attempt to end the case without a trial, citing evidence that the promotion decision was based on s*x stereotypes. A jury trial was deemed necessary, set to begin on Jan. 8 in Des Moines.
