Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved individuals were now free. This announcement came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
