Which do you love more, drawing or carving wood? Can’t choose? No need to—this workshop is for you.

Moku is the Japanese word for wood; lito is a term used in Japan that refers to lithography. A process developed by professor Seishi Ozaku in the 1970s, this innovative technique combines the qualities of woodcut with the delicate mark-making of lithography. While Ozaku was a bit secretive about his new process, Peter Massing will come prepared to teach you all he knows about the process. Additional techniques and mokulito practices will be demonstrated and examples will be provided for discussion. Online resources and technical papers will be provided.

Workshop participants will be encouraged to explore traditional and innovative drawing materials such as oil-based markers, litho crayons, tusche, sharpies, carbon paper, oil pastels, oil sticks, lipsticks, greasy and oily materials. Everyone will utilize the lithographic printing processes to create a variety of impressions, monoprints, and works on paper. More info at burningbonespress.com .

NEW -1 Day - WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT!!

JAPANESE INK PAINTING AND SUMINAGASHI MARBLING WORKSHOP WITH LUCINDA COBLEY

When: SATURDAY, APRIL 6
Time: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Where: Burning Bones Press -Houston

ALL LEVELS WELCOME: BEGINNER TO ADVANCED, AGES 17+

Explore the expressive qualities of Japanese sumi ink in this one-day experimental workshop, using a combination of three techniques for image making on paper. Sumi ink has a long history beginning with the arrival of ink making practice from China to Japan during the 7th century, where the then imperial capital of Nara became, and still is, a center for ink making. Japanese ink bears different qualities to other inks, such as Chinese or Indian Inks, as it dries a deep matte black that has a subtle almost smoky effect once diluted with water.

The three techniques to be explored during the workshop are 1. Printing using Suminagashi Marbling - suminagashi is an ancient Japanese printmaking technique where sumi ink is floated on water. Varied marbling patterns occur as the ink is carefully manipulated on the surface of the water and then printed directly onto small sheets of paper. The technique is subtle, and a degree of patience is required, yet easy to pick up and extremely gratifying. 2. Painting with Black Japanese Sumi Ink - using bamboo brushes and pens, and other experimental tools such as twigs and sea sponges. The ink offers a range of possibilities from subtle gradations of tone to bold mark-marking to convey a multitude of figurative forms or abstractive patterns. 3. Paper Collage for further image development -gluing, layering, and combining all together, the different techniques of cut or torn painted and marbled papers are part of a transformative process for creating an array of images and decorative effects. The workshop is suitable for anyone interested in printmaking, collage, and experimental ink painting. All techniques will be demonstrated, and assistance given for these processes with notes provided for future reference.
