We had a great support group meeting for our low vision patients this past Friday at our clinic. Sandhya from iBUG spoke about the organization and presented information about helpful software for those with low vision, including VoiceOver -- a gesture-based screen reader for iOS devices like iPhones. Hope Northrup, MD, found herself among at William P. Hobby Airport recently! She develops therapies for rare genetic diseases, watching preclinical work turn into better lives for children.

Congratulations to our Employee of the Month, Kaley Daigle! Kaley is an Ophthalmic Assistant for the Ophthalmology group and she was nominated by Dr. Ore-ofe Adesina. Dr. Adesina says, “Kaley is an amazing and integral member of the staff and a great technician for the neuro/plastics section. She is a versatile, capable, reliable, and consistent member of the team, always willing to help with a great attitude towards patients, staff, and physicians alike.”

Turn Back the Clock with Dr. Ying Chen UTHealth Houston oculoplastic surgeon Ying Chen, MD, discusses cosmetic treatments to have a more youthful appearance.

Since receiving his electronic video magnifier (EVM) last year, sixth-grader Parker Fortenberry – who has battled low vision issues and dyslexia most of his life – is getting As and Bs in all his core classes at Creekwood Middle School. He even has a 101 average in social studies, his favorite subject.

The stellar report card is especially fulfilling, considering Parker’s years-long journey to find the right resources. At just 8 months old, he was diagnosed with nystagmus, a condition that involves rapid, involuntary eye movements. Doctors also found a cancerous brain tumor that touched Parker’s pituitary gland and optic nerves, leading him to get a shunt and undergo chemotherapy. About four years later, the tumor grew back, leading to another round of chemotherapy and radiation. Thankfully, Parker has been in remission for the past five years. Still, his vision issues made learning a struggle.

“We were teaching him Braille, and then we found out about Dr. Bhavani Iyer at from a low-vision support group,” says Parker’s mom, Olivia Fortenberry. “She got Parker connected with a 24-inch EVM, and we abandoned Braille completely. I wish he would’ve had the EVM in first grade.”

This year’s EVM giveaway, hosted with Sight Savers America, is taking place today at the Dan Arnold Center for Vision Rehabilitation at Robert Cizik Eye Clinic, with 11 children set to receive the same type of device at no cost that changed Parker’s life one year ago.

Happy to see the next generation of aspiring ophthalmologists taking on the mantle of eye care for our community.

Our Low Vision Support Group is back to meeting in person here at the Robert Cizik Eye Clinic, on the 18th floor of 6400 Fannin St. Our low vision OT, Carmen Mullins, and supporting McGovern Medical School student volunteer and OSIG member, Nicole Carrabba, led the meeting, themed "Cooking with Vision Loss."

The folks over at the Dean McGee Eye Institute wrote a great article on our very own (and their former resident) Dr. Ore-ofe Adesina. Their article catches up with him to discuss the great things he's accomplished since leaving the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, with a focus on the great work he's done here. (pdf)
