Sawyer Yards
Sawyer Yards is one of the largest creative communities in the nation.
Carving Through Identity and Self-Awareness, a solo exhibition of linocut relief prints by Honduran-born, Houston artist Celea Guevara is on exhibit at the East Corridor Gallery in Sabine Street Studios through January 13, 2024.
At the heart of Celea Guevara's work is an ongoing self-examination, and exploration of her culture, identity, and spirituality. Her artwork shows a conscious documentation of the human condition, delving into the processes that transform us. The creative process, in this case, that of the engraving technique, is crucial for Guevara, allowing her to experiment tangibly but also taking her to personal depths that challenge her. Achieving in this world full of adversity is difficult, but despite everything she finds in her line-work the tools to keep going.
This collection of linocut prints started in 2017 when Guevara began working towards her MFA degree at Houston Baptist University. This body of work gathers elements from her own Garifuna culture and spiritual perspective. Guevara is from Honduras and immigrated to the United States, where she began questioning her identity, reflecting on who she is, where is she at, where she is going, and who walks with her in her journey. Her artwork speaks strongly to the themes of identity, culture, folklore. The iconographic elements included, such as nature, drums, plantains, fish, coconuts, the head wrap, etc, are highly significant in the Garifuna culture. These elements are combined consistently with the female figure. Guevara firmly believes in the significant role that women play in the development of humanity with all their resilience, and their capability to endure and overcome challenges.
This exhibition is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

Hands Talk, an exhibition by The Silos at Sawyer Yards artist, Debbie Gibbs, is on view December 2 - 30 in Bay 300 Gallery.
Hands are powerful communicators. The mixed media artworks in this exhibit, composed of paper and acrylic on stretched canvas, highlight the role of hands in communicating and connecting. From the most literal interpretation, sign language, to symbolic gestures, hands can say a lot. The racially diverse hands used in the works represent the beauty that diversity brings to the world as well as the complexity it brings to communication and connection.
Debbie Gibbs is a painter and mixed-media artist. Her current mosaic-like style comes from a love of Gaudi’s work in Barcelona and Fuster’s work in Havana, both of which she encountered in her travels. Her passion for celebrating diversity and promoting equity and inclusion is often reflected in her work. She does abstract work, in addition to employing iconic symbols such as the heart, the cross, and the hand.

Lumen Abstractions, an exhibition of tenant artists at Spring Street Studios features works that deal with the influence of light. The exhibition is located on the second floor of the building and is on view through February 10, 2024. Join the artists for an opening reception on Friday, November 17 from 6-8pm.
Lumen Abstractions goes beyond media and invites you to discover how artists, each in their unique way, harness the magic of light to convey their vision. The human eye measures visible light from a light source onto forms and textures. As a result our perception then becomes a uniquely abstracted form of realism. Interpreted shapes and hues form visual different understandings and representations of life, which become art.
Through a diverse range of artworks, we gain a profound understanding of how artists use the radiant energy of light to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Painters may strive to capture the luminous essence of something to convey the feeling of past to present to future existence. Photographers capture the essence of light in fleeting instants. Through their lenses, they freeze time and reveal the beauty of both natural and artificial light sources. Sculptors mold and carve light itself, creating awe-inspiring sculptures that play with transparency, translucency, and shadow.
Whether you’re a seasoned art collector or a casual observer, this exhibition promises to illuminate your imagination and reveal the connection between art and the essence of light.

Autonomic, an exhibition of Spring Street Studios artists and local guest artists, is curated by Houston's own Pablo Cardoza. The exhibition is located on the ground floor of the building. Join the artists for a reception and curator talk on November 17, from 6-8pm (on view through February 10, 2024).
The curator writes: "The drive to create visual symbols is incredibly old. Recent estimates age the earliest known cave paintings at 65,000 years old, yet one may still wonder what artworks were created before then that simply did not survive. This habit of making art has endured throughout time and lives with us today. It inhabits every culture and socio-economic level showing true durability as a facet of human behavior. What art provides for the viewer and creator, outside of any economic gain, is a moment to slow down and reflect. Moments of deep consideration and focus underlie the process of creating art and viewing art. An engagement of the autonomic nervous system follows and brings about a state of relaxation.
The connection between the work for this exhibition defies a singular theme and is rooted in the common goal amongst the artists of Spring Street Studios which is to express themselves visually. Devoting time and resources to the creative process to satisfy this deep need is another unifying element for the artists in this exhibit. The works chosen for this show reflect this passion and commitment."

Thanks to THE LEADER. for the wonderful article about Winter Street Studios reopening. We are thrilled to have our artists back home in the building, make sure to come visit them all soon!
Winter Street Studios celebrates re-opening following last year's Christmas arson fire Last Christmas, the Houston arts community was shaken by the devastating fire at Winter Street Studios. But it’s finally time to celebrate the reopening of this iconic art space, and
Painting and Poetry, a solo exhibition of works by Silos artist, Nergis Mustafa is on exhibition in Bay 300 Gallery of The Silos at Sawyer Yards through November 30.
We all carry lines of poetry within us. A poet chooses specific words, a tone, a point of view, and form, and visual artists do the same. Both art and poetry speak to our imaginations through the power of images, and both art forms inspire each other. They are about tapping into intuition and letting the poem or painting flow onto the page. Mustafa's paintings use symbols, often to mask deeper meaning. The resulting works are coded narratives and can be experienced almost like a treasure hunt.
Nergis Mustafa is a mixed-media artist currently residing in Houston. She received her Certificate in Painting from the Glassell School of Art and works full-time in her studio, #214 at the Silos at the Sawyer Yards. Join the artist for a reception on November 11, from 5-7pm.
Sawyer Yards is excited to announce WIP 2023, the first exhibition of the tenant artists at Winter Street Studios in almost a year. Join us for a reception on November 11, from 5-7pm to celebrate the return of the artists and their generative energy to the building! The exhibition is on view on both floors through February 10, 2024.
WIP is artist shorthand for "work in progress". The reconstruction and renovation of Winter Street Studios, as well as the artists' rebuilding of their studio practice and livelihoods is still in progress, however many artists have finally returned to Sections A and B of the building. This exhibition is a testament to their resilience and their dedication to continue their art making.

Curated by Houston artist Jorge "Toto" Flores, The Sabines Exhibition is a rich exhibition of artworks by the Sabine Street Studios tenant artists, that explores the idea of passage and what that entails in each artist's life. As an artist, there is a key moment in the creative process when the individual is forced to change or adjust, ultimately changing their path. The artists closely examine this transitional period through different media like painting and sculpture. Come join the tenant artists' journey in the South Gallery at Sabine Street Studios, on view through January 14, 2024.

This Saturday, October 14, John Bishop's Earthen exhibition opens in the West Gallery at Silver Street, with a reception from 5-8pm after Second Saturday's open studios!
An important part of any art practice is being grounded. Earthen is a series of abstract, mixed-media paintings that explore the colors, textures, and emotions evoked by a meditation on earth. Whether by means of sweeping landscapes, or subtle details of the soil beneath one's feet, Earthen is an attempt to return the artist, and the viewer, to those most elemental experiences of home.
John Bishop is a painter and illustrator born and raised in Houston. Though he spent 30 years working as a librarian in Texas, New Mexico, California, Romania, The Emirates, New Zealand, and Russia, John returned home in 2016 where he and his partner now work full-time on their creative business in fine art, publishing, video production and commercial photography. Their studio is #314 at Silver Street Studios, on the Sawyer Yards campus.
On view Monday - Saturday from 9am-5pm through November 25.
Grief is a Portal: Shadow Work, a solo exhibition of works by Silos artist Rachel Gonzales. The exhibition is on view in the Bay 300 Gallery of The Silos at Sawyer Yards through October 31. A public reception will take place on Saturday, October 14 from 5-7pm.
From the artist: This collection is a personal archive of my own shadow work and inner child healing while confronting death and honoring the collective waves of grief on a soulful level.
Grief is a portal that stops me in my tracks and grants me access to a deeper truth beneath the surface. It is the dark side of the moon—our shadow selves that are always there yet never seen but felt. I never completely knew life until I knew death. I’m shedding light on this through my art. Everything I’ve ever made has emerged from a place ranging from the depths of hopelessness, stillness, and ordinariness, and triumph over heartache. I use poetry and language in my titles or in the work itself to hint at the grieving process. Befriending my own monsters of grief over the past eleven years has given me an innate ability to uncover raw truths and embrace vulnerability as my strength as a part of being human.
It is the divine gaze that enables the viewer and the subject to connect in the ephemeral moment of seeing and being seen--the raw human experience of being present and having one’s presence felt.

At What Cost: Part II is an immersive corn maze installation by Salvadoran, Houston-based multidisciplinary artist Lorena Molina. With stalks sourced from Texas farms, Molina's corn maze installation creates the grounds for meditation on the immigrant experience, US imperialism, and access to safety and freedom.
Lorena Molina is an Assistant Professor of Photography and Digital Media at the University of Houston and founder of Third Space Gallery, a community space and gallery that supports and highlights BIPOC artists in Cincinnati.

For their latest solo exhibition, Restless Node in a Quiet Net, Arohi Ranade explores the visual and symbolic interconnections within a curated subset of their hand-made digital & analog artworks. The installation is composed of abstract and colorful mixed media works and will be on view from September 18 - November 17, at the East Corridor Gallery in Sabine Street Studios. The artist will be present to give an artist talk at the opening reception on September 30, from 5-7pm.
The installation emerged from a cyclical process that is Arohi's intuitive art practice. First, they capture photos, deconstruct images, and find a node (node: an image, symbol, or sign that appears on the visible surface of a canvas or fabric). Second, they assemble collages, manifest reproductions, and adorn nodes with paint, thread, ink, and ash. Third, they draw lines of thread between the restless nodes and lift the veil of shadow off of the quiet net (net: an assemblage of many nodes that is interconnected by a line of thread). For the artist, this unveiling is a gentle, yet complex process of self-inquiry and for the viewers, it is a strong yet subtle appearance of colors, lines, forms, shapes, symbols, and stories.
ClayHouston presents FLUX: 2023 ClayHouston Members' Show. This annual Members’ non-juried show includes diverse works from current ClayHouston members who reside in and around the Houston area. Ranging from sculptural to functional ceramics, this showcase represents artists from varying levels.
Flux is the state of continuous change, an ongoing process, and in the context of clay and glaze, it is an integral element that facilitates important transformations within ceramics. Clay is a volatile medium that requires constant adaptation to translate concepts into tangible objects; from form to surface, ceramics carry evidence of the maker and the processes used. This dynamic material unites the Houston clay community across all backgrounds, levels, and interests.
On view September 21 - November 11 with an opening reception on Saturday, September 30 from 5-7pm.

Proteus Within, is an installation by artist Pavlina Vagioni that will occupy the TANK Space at Spring Street Studios at Sawyer Yards from September 9 through November 25.
Proteus Within combines sculptural elements with kinetic light, optical illusions, and sound. Drawing from the myth of Proteus, the shape-shifting sea deity from Greek mythology, the work manifests a sense of fluidity and transformation. Through a dynamic interplay of light, darkness, sound, and three-dimensional forms, Pavlina Vagioni transforms the TANK space into an illusory sea, echoing the ever-changing forms of the mythical Proteus. Simultaneously, the work delves into the territory of the collective unconscious, pulling references from analytical psychology and Carl Jung's theories while rendering a commentary on the "Proteus effect" in our digital age—the influence of one's virtual avatar on real-world behavior.
Rooted in Hellenic mythology, Proteus Within builds a cultural bridge, promoting an enriching dialogue between Houston's diverse community and Greece. Spanning the conscious and subconscious realms, it links the individual to the collective, inviting a conversation between personal narrative and global mythologies.
Down to Earth, a solo exhibition of mixed media works on canvas by Silver Street artist, Gabriela Monterroso.
As an intuitive painter, Gabriela Monterroso creates figures that highlight the beauty of the faded and withered. Through intentional layering, line work, and mark-making, she emulates the irreversible flow of life and reflects on faded beauty and the newly acquired charm that time gives.
Incorporating found paper and employing the qualities of the paint itself to create texture within her works, she achieves a more dimensional foundation. Monterroso then applies various mediums like charcoal, pastel, and graphite to enhance definition and depth. By alternating the process of collage and drawing, she lends a seamless blend of the two approaches to her works.
The artist writes: "Inspired by myths and earth elements, my figures are icons that offer a sense of tranquility and sympathetic magic. Disrupting the idea that the human body is separate from its environment, I rely on earth tones and natural pigments, older than us, to give insight and understanding of the natural force of ‘womanhood’ through decades and centuries. Simultaneously, persuaded by stories of a woman with horse traits who was feared to be able to move the earth through her force, my depiction of the horse is a creative expression of my own alter-ego and a reflection of the force within every woman."
On view through October 7.
