As I get older, I am finding that my scalp is feeling itchier. This may be due to inflammation caused by dry patches. I am trying to create a healthier scalp by washing my hair every two days and increasing the time between single process hair color.

My mom, Joanne, turned 90 last March. The transition from 89 to 90 has been very difficult for her physically. She has been experiencing issues with bursitis. Her pain level on a scale from 1-10 in her words, “is a 13.”

Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that act as cushions between bones, tendons, joints, and muscles. When these sacs become inflamed, they can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in the affected area. Bursitis commonly occurs in the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, or heel.

My mom is very frustrated because the only comfortable position is laying down. Her mobility is severely restricted. Her pain is affecting her posture as well.

The first step was to see her primary care physician, Dr. Ahmed. Dr. Ahmed prescribed an x-ray of the hip to figure out where to do the steroid injection and an MRI to check for arthritis. The MRI showed inflammation of the bursa but no arthritis. Dr. Ahmed did the injection and prescribed physical therapy.

After a month, my mom’s pain level had not improved so she recommended my mom see Dr. Grover who is a pain management doctor.

We saw him last week. While he read my mom’s hip X-Ray and MRI, he thinks the issue may be more widespread.

His short-term plan is to:

1. Prescribe pain killers. She is on Tramadol and Meloxicam. She said that while these are better than Advil and Extra Strength Tylenol, her pain level “is a 9.”

2. Inject the hip under X-ray with lidocaine and a steroid.

3. Authorize an MRI of her back.

The purpose of communicating this is to remind you to take care of yourself. If you are experiencing pain, it is better to consult with a physician sooner than later. My mom’s bursitis is from decades of working out. While this has kept her mentally and physically fit, it was a lot of wear and tear on her body. I think if we are aware of issues like bursitis it will help with our aging process.

I was diagnosed with benign vertigo. For the past three years, I have been afraid of walking outside in New York City because I felt unstable. I just thought that I became the “country mouse” after I moved to Houston…

I saw a doctor because a month ago, when I lay down on my left side, the room started spinning. It was like having a horrible hangover but without the fun…Weirdly, it only occurred when I was lying down on my left side.

Dr. Ahmed said that I was experiencing benign vertigo. This happens when the crystals in your ear are out of place. Apparently, these crystals are held in a jelly-like membrane. Over time, the membrane weakens, and the crystals are dislodged. So, my poor brain was so confused because it was receiving multiple signals. This has caused me to have dizziness, headaches and nausea. And I felt tired all of the time and my eyes hurt.

My Vestibular Therapist, Jennifer Fuentes told me that my condition was very mild. She is specially trained to reposition the inner ear crystals. She is unable to see in my inner ear and relies on looking at my eyes before and after treatment. Apparently, the eye or eyes twitch because they are constantly receiving contradictory signals. My initial treatment involved the left side. I only required two treatments. She can tell if the treatment is working because my eye or eyes no longer twitch.

A couple of weeks later, the vertigo returned. It turned out that the right side needed to be repositioned. Interestingly, while she said that air travel is not supposed to affect the ear crystals, I find that every time I return from a trip, my vertigo returns.

I feel kind of bad because I was incorrectly blaming Long Covid…I would encourage you to see a physician if you are feeling dizzy…

My mom, Joanne has suffered from insomnia since her late 30’s. Her physician, Nasiya Ahmed, MD recommended she drink eight ounces of tart cherry juice every night. This is because tart cherry juice is full of melatonin.

A 2012 study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that tart cherry juice consumption led to a reduction in insomnia symptoms and increase in better sleep quality. Another study in 2018 indicated an increase in sleep time.

My mom was pleasantly surprised to find that drinking the tart cherry juice helped her sleep an extra two hours a night. While I have never experienced insomnia; I am one of those people who fall asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow, she thought that I should drink it as well.

So, every night at 7:30pm central time, when I am in town, we sit down and drink our eight ounces of cherry juice. We buy our juice from HEB and Trader Joes…

I appreciate working with Gen-Z and Millennials. I learn a lot from them. One of the things I learned is to be more protective of our environment. While our initiatives are small, we are mindful of them daily.

We:
1. Recycle our boxes. This is why some of your orders may not appear in a new box. We bring our boxes from home and from family members who also contribute their boxes.

2. Stopped using the blue organza bags to package the products in your order. While they were beautiful, when we took a poll in a past newsletter, the majority of you who voted urged us to stop using them.

3. Switched to bio-degradable packing material. We buy packing peanuts from Uline that are made of starch. They decompose in water.

4. Tried to eliminate printed brochures by printing QR codes for each brochure on their respective product carton. Alas, we have to bring them back at the request of our PRO MD accounts because patient’s “want to read something physical.” So, we will consolidate the individual product brochures into one brochure.

I am now part of the group that wears hearing aids. In 2022, I had a hearing test for the first time since childhood. I was informed that I lost 25-30 percent of my hearing and that my ENT physician recommended that I start wearing hearing aids.

I was a little scared and very resistant, so I didn’t act on her recommendation. Last December 2023, I saw her for a checkup. The good news is that my hearing loss remained unchanged and my cognition (e.g. word recognition) was 96% in the right ear and 92% in the left ear.

The ability to recognize words is due to a path from the auditory nerve to the brain. Hearing loss will cause the brain to start shutting down this neural path because it is not used. Once it is lost, you can’t get it all back. For example, my mom, Joanne has 43% hearing cognition, and she can’t regain back the loss. This fact scared her and now for the first time, at age 89, she is consistently wearing her hearing aids(yay!).

The audiologist said that wearing hearing aids should be done when you don’t feel you need them. I was fitted for hearing aids because I want to preserve my cognitive health. It has been a game-changer. I can hear a broader range of sounds. Everything sounds crisper and clearer.

The good news is that they are comfortable, and my hair hides them. In order for the brain to receive the benefits, I have to wear them 8-10 hours a day.
