Jay Malone-Stein, the king of flannel, has worked behind the bar at Cecil’s since New Year’s Eve 1994. There is no Cecil’s without Jay. As we count down our final days at 600 W Gray, come in tonight and chill with Jay. Hell, let’s pretend it’s New Year’s Eve and celebrate Jay being here 30 years.

Thank you Jay!

A lot of people have expressed concern for Frida, and we greatly appreciate that. Frida is part of our family. She will be moving into a great and safe home with Jay. Frida and Jay have a special bond with each other. She will hang with us a little longer before moving to her new home.

We are reaching out to everyone today with hard hitting news. The landlord of our property has decided to sell and the incoming landlord has elected not to sign a lease with Cecil’s. So we have to announce that after over 34 unforgettable years, Cecil’s will be closing its doors at 600 W Gray tentatively on November 10, 2024.

For decades, Cecil’s has been more than just a bar—it’s been a second home. A place where strangers walked in but left as lifelong friends, where laughter echoed through the walls and stories were shared over countless rounds. From birthday toasts, to first dates, to celebrations of life, to spontaneous nights that turned into unforgettable moments, Cecil’s has been at the heart of so many cherished memories.

Sadly, Cecil’s faces an uncertain future. Though we don’t know what lies ahead, we’ll always hold onto the memories that made this place more than just a neighborhood pub—it made it a Houston institution. While we’re still considering the next steps, we’ll keep our Cecil’s family informed as we navigate this transition.

Until we say our final goodbyes, we invite you to come by for one last drink, reminisce about the good times, and share your favorite stories with us. Let’s celebrate everything Cecil’s has meant to us all.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.

Cecil’s Pub will be closed next Saturday afternoon for the Celebration of Life of Jim Herd, one of our beloved owners who recently passed. The pub will officially open at 7pm, but if you knew Jim and wish to join us to share stories, the event starts at 3pm. We ask all to respect this Celebration of Life, and if joining, please bring your Sarcastic ‘A’ game. Jim Herd was a truly great person and his influence can be felt all over Houston through his work in Design and Build. He loved Cecil’s Pub and took great joy meeting with patrons at the end of his work day in the side office within Cecil’s.

Food will be provided by one of his favorite Houston establishments (while it lasts)

We miss you Jim!

This week we lost one of our beloved owners. Jim Herd was a force. He loved Cecil’s, he loved his craft, which was designing and building Houston’s finest bars, restaurants, homes, offices, etc. When in need, he would help. Sometimes that help came in the form of sarcasm just to make you laugh and help you deal with the issue at the moment. His intelligence was unequivocal. His charisma was unbelievable. He will be missed. He will never be forgotten.

We will be hosting a Celebration of Life soon. Details to come. We love you boss Jim.

Our Story

Cecils has a long history in Houston. Join us as we travel down the roads of the past and the future with one of Houston's prime watering holes, which has a tradition of atmosphere, music, darts, pool, pub grub, and most importantly...wonderful and fascinating clientele.
"Blythe Spirits started at the corner of W.Gray @ Stanford (where PJ's is now) in 1985 with live bands upstairs and a neighborhood pub downstairs. We had a lot of regulars, some who continued to be regulars for the next three decades. In 1990, realizing that the local people getting together downstairs was what was important to the bar, I moved the bar to the bigger building next door and opened Cecil's. It is still a neighborhood bar, even though the neighborhood has changed and most customers don't live in the neighborhood anymore. We are very proud to have such a wonderful family of regulars, people who look out for each other and are always there with a kind, or very cynical word, but always willing to lend a hand or a hug. We are also very happy that so many of our friends have celebrated birthdays here, met their significant others here, gotten engaged here, and even married here." - Kimberly Blythe, Cecil's original owner.

Surviving the fire:
"January 10th, 2004. Around 1 on a Saturday night, Cecil's had a fire. The employees did a great job of making sure everyone got out safely. Many customers came up to try to pay their tabs before they left ! Everyone stood across the street and sadly watched Cecil's burn. We were lucky that just the west side was damaged, sparing the actual bar and coolers. We still have the original jukebox and pool tables.. The jukebox had a little water damage but survived, and is still considered one the best jukeboxes in Houston."
Our Staff:
"I am very fortunate to have such a wonderful bunch of people working for Cecil's as well. They are very important to making Cecil's the comfortable, friendly place that it is. They are the best. On New Year's Eve 2016 Jay Malone-Stein celebrates his 21st year bar tending at Cecil's".

Cecil’s traditions and values are proudly continued with it’s new owners. 600 W.Gray LLC has made several improvements to the building and facilities while keeping the comfortable and relaxed surroundings that the clientele have come to expect. Cecil’s is still your friendly neighborhood bar and was recently voted Best Neighborhood Bar by the People’s Choice of Houston Press.
