Labor day is a celebration of all the social and economic achievements you have accomplished throughout the year. Every long shift, every sale, every deadline, every raise, promotion, and even the smallest of victories.

In the early 1900s, crude oil became one of the most sought-after resources in America. When oil was discovered in Texas, word spread out like wildfire. Young, daring, hard-working men flocked from all over America to Texas in search of their piece of fortune. These pioneers were called Wildcatters.

Because of their bravery, strength, and determination, their success led to the economic boom in Texas and made home what it is today: The Texas oil Industry. With half a million people employed in the Texas oil industry today, 296 oil rigs, 32 refineries, and over 12,000 oil companies, many picked Houston as their home, now known as the Energy Capital of the World.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the oil, natural gas, and energy industries for their commitment and hard work and for playing a significant role in the Houston, Texas, and United States economies.

Before the assembly line, workers would have long shifts and low wages due to production costs. When Henry Ford perfected the assembly line, he was able to add 3 equal shifts at 8 hours per day and was able to pay middle-class wages (5-dollar days) to his employees. This caused other companies to follow suit, which turned into an even more competitive economy.

Because of Ford’s and many other companies' innovative techniques during the Industrial Revolution, Industries were able to employ more workers and pay higher wages than ever before.

There is no doubt that people are the power that drives the economy, but companies lead the nation through innovation, prosperity, and stability. Everyone plays a part in this nation, from your at-home and small businesses to your companies and corporations. Together, we built America!

The kiss of life was captured by Pulitzer Prize winner Rocco Morabito, a photographer for the Jacksonville Journal. It depicts lineman J.D. Thompson giving lineman Randall Champion mouth-to-mouth resuscitation after being electrocuted while performing maintenance high up on a powerline pole. J.D. Thompson was successful in providing Randall CPR, which ultimately saved his life.

This image reminds us of the dangers of being a lineman. Their duties include repairing, installing, and maintaining electrical transmission and distribution systems. While there are many safety measures in place, it is still a high-risk career.

Almost 10% of 120,000 linemen in the US are working in Texas, on call 24/7, 365 days a year. During weather disasters, thousands of more linemen from neighboring states and countries travel to Texas to help thousands of families without electricity. Electricity is a unique and important commodity that we use daily. Linemen are truly a backbone behind our nation. From PrimeWay, a sincere thank you and Happy Labor Day!

What started as a Mexican-American deal during World War II led to over 4.5 million Mexican citizens migrating to the United States under an agreement known as the Bracero Program over a 22-year period, from July 1942 to December 1, 1964.

As American men were drafted into World War 2, the nation was plagued by an overwhelming need for farm laborers. Braceros worked on farms, railroads, and even ranches, making it possible for the US to keep up with economic war demands and recover from the Great Depression.

Due to their commitment, persistence, and hard work, the nation progressed through war, post-war, and the Great Depression.

During World War II, more than 6 million women contributed to the war efforts by working in factories, volunteering for the Red Cross, and serving directly in the military. This was during an era when men went to work, and women took the role of homemakers. Men were called into the military, leaving women without a provider and a nation without its workforce. This event would be a major turning point in women’s civil rights and independence.

Because of women like Naomi Parker, Mae Krier, and many more, America stabilized economically, stayed on par with wartime necessities, and maintained the house and family singlehandedly. This was a true example of what a woman was capable of.

Rosies, as in Rosie the Riveter (the iconic woman in “We Can Do It”), are a prime example of what people, communities, and society can accomplish when given the opportunity.

In remembrance of all the women who helped shape the nation into what it has become today, PrimeWay offers a heartfelt thank you!

While this photograph is a photo-op orchestrated by the Rockefeller Building, it demonstrates the conditions steel workers endured while constructing skyscrapers. During the Great Depression, steelwork in skyscrapers was very popular. Over 40,000 people were employed to construct the RCA building, and this photograph represents them all.

850 feet above the ground, 11 men hang from the side of a steel beam, casually having lunch. While most of their identities have been lost throughout history, this shows just how dangerous, courageous, and fascinating these steelworkers are.

PrimeWay would like to celebrate all steelworkers, not just this Labor Day, but every day. There are 1.2 million steelworkers (working or retired) in the US, 8,000 structural steel workers in Texas, and thousands more spanning from piping, petrochemical, and refineries. A heartfelt thank you to all our local and state steelworkers. Without you, our city, state, and country would be years behind technologically, economically, and in production.

Here’s a Tip!

What is the Debt-to-Income Ratio (DTI), and how does it affect your loans?

DTI is the result of a formula used to determine whether you would likely be able to take on more debt if you were approved for a loan. Lenders use this when applying for an auto loan, Student loan, credit card, personal loan, home loan, or even apartment rental. DTI is not only used to determine if you qualify for a loan, but it also affects the interest rate.

There are 2 parts to the formula:
Gross income- How much income do you receive monthly before taxes and other deductions are taken from your overall pay.

Monthly Debt- Money that you owe every month. This includes loan payments, credit card payments, alimony, and child support. It does not include car insurance, cable bills, cell phones, utilities, or groceries.

The formula:
Monthly Debt / Gross Income = DTI Ratio
Divide your pre-tax income by your monthly debt and your result is your DTI percentage.

A good rule of thumb:
Great- Below or at 35%
Good- Between 36% and 49%
Poor- 50% or more

Events included supporting and sponsoring a job fair and HR symposium with MCJCF and Houston Community College. All of the events were wonderful and gave various resources and benefits to the Missouri City, Ft. Bend and Houston communities.
