A Boeing 787 departed London Heathrow on Tuesday with historic cargo: 60 tons of waste fats and low-carbon kerosene to power a Virgin Atlantic flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

Roughly seven and a half hours later, the aircraft touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, becoming the first large commercial airliner to traverse the Atlantic with 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

USA BioEnergy, LLC (“USA BioEnergy”) today announced a 20-year offtake agreement with Southwest Airlines Co. (“Southwest”) under which Southwest may purchase up to 680 million gallons of neat sustainable aviation fuel (“SAF”).

Once blended with conventional jet fuel, the SAF could produce the equivalent of 2.59 billion gallons of net-zero1 fuel and avoid 30 million metric tons of CO2 over the agreement term. Southwest® plans to begin purchasing SAF from USA BioEnergy’s facility near Bon Wier, Texas, as early as 2028.

Additionally, as part of the offtake agreement, USA BioEnergy and Southwest have established a long-term strategic relationship offering Southwest the opportunity to purchase up to another projected 180 million gallons of SAF per year from future planned production facilities.

"Petroleum largely comprises hydrocarbons—essentially arrangements of carbon and hydrogen chemically linked together that have some pretty remarkable and advantageous properties," said National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) scientist Brandon Knott. "But hydrocarbons lack heteroatoms like oxygen and nitrogen, and it can require significant energy to add them in when manufacturing polymers needing broader functionality than what hydrocarbons provide."

A good solution, Knott explained, is adding oxygen- and nitrogen-rich biomass and waste to the ingredient list. Corn stalks, algae, and even garbage contain extra chemical linkages that often afford chemists greater flexibility for achieving specific properties.

Researchers estimate these processes will not only revolutionize plastics recycling, but could also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the conventional production of these industrial chemicals by roughly 60 percent. “There are so many different products and so many routes we can pursue with this platform technology,” says Huber. “There’s a huge market for the products we’re making. First-ever biofuel achievements have been recorded in recent months. The U.S. Energy Information Administration revealed Sept. 5 that for the first time, production capacity for renewable diesel and other biofuels in January reached 3 billion gallons per year, outpacing biodiesel’s capacity of 2.1 billion gallons.

California state officials in August proclaimed a milestone in replacing 50% of diesel used there with clean fuels.

To help accelerate innovation and develop new biomanufacturing approaches, three new projects were selected for funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).

BETO and NSF have selected the following projects:

The University of California, Irvine and University of California, Davis will jointly work to enhance the carbon and energy efficiency of a biomanufacturing process by upgrading carboxylic acids into precursors for biofuels and chemicals used in industry.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison will develop and use tools to close knowledge gaps surrounding transporters in Gram-negative bacteria to facilitate the development of superior biomanufacturing hosts.

University of Georgia researchers will work to increase understanding of the metabolic pathways that allow the microorganism Megasphaera elsdenii to produce hexanoic acid, that can be engineered to create sustainable aviation fuel among a host of other products.
