Even though Bastrop County is not in the direct path of today’s solar eclipse, some of us may be tempted to gaze in the sky, hopeful to just get a glimpse of this historical event.

The only safe way to look directly at the un-eclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “Eclipse Glasses” or hand-held solar viewers.

Pinhole projection is an alternative method for safely viewing partially eclipsed Sun as well.

However, The Master tells me that he has been profoundly touched by two things: One, the overwhelming and helpful responses to his queries regarding MY book and, Two, he has just received that wonderful painting by Hélène Bexkens of beloved Tolly. It is so beautiful. So he explained to Magnificent Me that he might be a bit busy for a while, and we all know what that means. Harrumph! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | City of Bastrop, SpaceX, Corix Sign Historic Deal

BASTROP, TX - March 8, 2024 - - Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo is excited to announce a joint agreement between the City, SpaceX, and Corix that will enable the treatment of wastewater for properties along FM 1209 and 969 at the City of Bastrop’s brand new wastewater treatment facility. Corix will be handling the transfer of the wastewater to the City’s plant.

“The real winners here are the residents, ratepayers, and taxpayers of the City of Bastrop. Our state of the art Wastewater Treatment Plant #3 broke ground in August of 2021 to service the City’s current needs and also to accomodate for the rapid growth and expansion within our region. This deal is exactly what the plant was built to accomodate. Having SpaceX as a customer of our wastewater treatment services helps pay for the the $32.6 million plant. We are proud to partner with such an exciting new member of our growing community,” Carrillo says.

In March of 2023, Space X announced plans to treat their own wastewater through applying for a permit with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The original SpaceX permit application to the TCEQ was to discharge 142,000 gallons per day. After the first public meeting, all three parties came together to brainstorm a potential solution that would solve not only the wastewater solution for SpaceX, but also the surrounding areas. SpaceX “is thrilled that an agreement was reached. Being able to find a solution that benefits neighbors and promotes growth is a win for everyone. We are excited to call Bastrop one of our new homes, and are doing our best to be a good neighbor,” says AB Ozdil of SpaceX. One year later, all parties involved have signed a deal to do just that.

“Treating wastewater does not happen at a loss. It is a profitable enterprise and serving such a large customer will help keep rates low and the plant operating in tip-top shape for decades to come,” said Carrillo.

The infrastructure to serve the area is expected to be complete in early 2026.

During every emergency response, we appreciate all Bastrop County first responders who prioritize saving lives during every emergency. Today is National First Responders Day, as designated by Congress in 2017. This day recognizes the heroic men and women who make it their business to take immediate action when disaster strikes.

Our firefighters, police, EMTs & paramedics and 911 communications operators are highly skilled professionals. They spend hours training and exercising their skills to be ready to respond and save lives during emergencies.

We also recognize other emergency first responders who keep our residents safe during emergencies and who help restore things back to normal during and after the disaster, including the Cities of Bastrop, Smithville, and Elgin public works departments, Bastrop County road and bridge teams and all city, county, and privately owned utility departments (communications, electric, gas, water and wastewater).
