That may seem a while ago, but it won’t when it happens to you…” In this dramatic adaptation of her award-winning, bestselling memoir, Joan Didion transforms the story of the sudden and unexpected loss of her husband and the prolonged illness of her only daughter into a stunning and powerful one-woman play.

PHYLICIA RASHAD JOINS THE FADE TO BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL AS AMBASSADOR
[HOUSTON, TX, September 10, 2024] Shabach Enterprise is honored to announce that Phylicia Rashad, the iconic actor, director, and Tony Award winner, has joined the Fade To Black Arts Festival as its official ambassador. Ms. Rashad's illustrious film, television, and theater career has earned her widespread acclaim and respect. Her dedication to the arts and her influence as a cultural leader make her an invaluable asset to this groundbreaking festival.
Ms. Rashad has expressed her appreciation for this project, recognizing its significance in celebrating African-American artistry and heritage. Notably, her mother, Vivian Allen, was a front-runner for a similar festival, "Arts on Main Street," in Houston fifty years ago. This legacy continues with Ms. Rashad's participation, making her role as ambassador both a tribute to her mother's pioneering spirit and a forward-looking commitment to the future of the arts in Houston.
Phylicia Rashad's endorsement of the Fade To Black Arts Festival underscores the festival's mission to elevate African American voices and create a lasting impact on Houston's cultural landscape. ABOUT THE FADE TO BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL
Fade To Black Arts Festival 2025: For one amazing week, Downtown Houston will Fade To Black! Join us as Shabach Enterprise proudly presents the Fade To Black Arts Festival, a biennial, citywide collaboration addressing the systemic lack of recognition and promotion of African American artists in Texas. In partnership with over 20 prominent Houston arts organizations mentioned above, the inaugural event from June 8-14, 2025, transforms Downtown Houston into a vibrant hub of African American creativity. This unprecedented festival celebrates African American film, music, poetry, and theatre, providing a positive opportunity for arts organizations to unite in meaningful support. Attendees can immerse themselves in a week-long experience featuring exciting events, educational workshops, networking opportunities, film screenings, poetry and theatre readings, musical performances, master classes, youth programs, internships, and live African American exhibits across the city. Our festival also precedes Juneteenth, adding cultural significance to our celebration. Partnerships with key organizations ensure a citywide impact, prioritizing inner-city youth and historically underserved districts.

Our Story
In spite of all the things that divide us today, there is one thing we all share: we all have a story. The story of our lives, the story of our own experience… We all have a story that is uniquely our own. But that uniqueness doesn’t separate us – it connects us to the human experience.
Stories span generations; stories are passed down. Stories open us to the shared reality of being alive. And that’s what we do in theater. We share stories. For 42 years, Main Street Theater’s intimate performance style and child-driven theater education programs have been integral parts of the way we share stories with each other.
Clayton Lord from Theatre Bay Area, has written, "...we believe strongly in the ability of art to stretch across divides, to instill empathy, to educate about new experiences, to encourage creative and critical thought, to transform relationships....We make art because we believe it makes being human better."
