Black Classicists in Texas consists of three exhibitions, each located at a different cultural venue in central Austin: the Benson Latin American Collection on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, the Downs-Jones Library at Huston-Tillotson University, and the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center.
The three exhibits are divided thematically, and each can be viewed on its own. For the best experience, we recommend taking a self-guided tour to experience all three venues, as well as other historical sites of Austin’s Black community. Can’t visit Austin? We have you covered. You can explore the exhibit materials online or even take a 3-D digital tour!

Modernity Revisited
Course Number: HON 4391H
Instructor: Barnes
Instructional Mode: Face-to-Face
Class Number: 24007
Days and Times: TTh 1:00 PM-2:30 PM
All literature set in the past is, to a greater or lesser degree, really about the present. This was true in ancient Greece, where writers turned their myths and history into literature that addressed critical issues of their own time, and it remains true now. This course will investigate how a handful of twenty-first century writers from around the globe have turned to ancient Greek literature for narrative inspiration, and as a means by which to address issues, problems, and anxieties of our own time. What do these contemporary writers have to say about how we make use of the ancient past and about the world all around us, right now? And what is it about ancient Greek literature that has proven so irresistible to writers far removed from them in time and place? As we read, we’ll be searching for connections, differences, surprises, new perspectives—in short, looking for the meanings that connect us, now, to the world of the Greeks.
(Note that you will need to fill out a petition with our advisor for it to count towards our degrees.)
