Their music, while rooted in the folk idiom, draws on jazz, classical and sacred/spiritual music influences.

In 2020 I finished 12 paintings in relation to the poetry of Hafiz. I wondered what I would do next. I am interested in questions of contemporary religious or spiritually concerned art. In our world, that is so dedicated to materialism and art as commodity, how can art speak of inner experiences in a way that feels relevant to our time? The poetry of Mary Szybist does this for me. The poems that I used explore the spiritual as it finds its way into the material. What are the aspects of this annunciation? Is it an act between a god and the woman? How does the grass feel under the woman’s knees? Does it have the mood of a garden party or of pain? I am deeply grateful for the year of working with these poems as a painter. They have opened doors for me into the reality of being permeated by the Spirit.
