Join us for the opening reception of "Bears, Cats, Dunes, Ice and Two Elephants": Photography by John Lipkowitz on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 2 - 6 pm.

For a quarter of a century, John Lipkowitz has been a serious photographer primarily interested in nature and wildlife. His many travel experiences, both alone and with his wife, Nina, have been focused on nature especially the wildlife of Africa and the ice, light and wildlife of Polar regions.

“Traveling to Polar regions, especially the Arctic in summer with 20 to 24 hours of daylight presents opportunities to maximize one’s day. If a polar bear is sighted at 2 AM it is up, pile the layers on, and go out on deck no matter how cold to await the long approach of our ship as the captain seeks to minimize the alarm for the bear. “

“As sentient beings, each bear has a personality and some exhibit fear as this giant “creature” (the ship), approaches which causes us to break off contact. In contrast, others are curious and either pay us little attention, or, if the bear is one of the rare ones, it actually appoaches us”

His travels in southern and eastern Africa offered wildlife and landscape on a much different platter.
Although the numbers of many species have plummeted since first there in 1997, Lipkowitz has observed how human encroachment, hunting and poaching has caused habitat loss. Many countries in Africa have well-developed protected lands consisting of national parks, tribal areas and private concessions recognizing the educational and economic benefits for their people of preserving as much as possible of what wildlife that remains.

Join us this Saturday, April 13 from 2-6 pm for the opening reception of Marilyn Orner: "The Sky, The Land, The Water"
Painter Marilyn Orner has focused on landscapes for years, especially enjoying painting water. The movement, light, depth, and reflections have all been sources of inspiration. Some of her work eliminates almost all the surrounding landscape, giving just hints to the water’s setting. Recently she began to be equally intrigued by the ever changing sky as an entity similar to the water, and many of her new paintings have given the clouds and the changing sky colors top billing. To balance the sweeping vistas, she has made some works that focus on details or single object. Not trying to record an encounter with photographic verisimilitude, she has instead shared the moment, and what she saw and felt.

Hudson, NY – 510 Warren Street Gallery is starting the New Year with “Into the Garden,” a show of paintings by Kate Knapp beginning Friday, February 2nd and ending on Sunday, February 25th The opening reception will be on Saturday, February 10 from 2 to 6 pm. All are welcome to come and meet the artist and enjoy refreshments in the gallery.

Kate Knapp loves her gardens and these paintings are filled with that love in the form of brilliant colors and complex designs. We are led down the stone walkways into the flower beds and vegetable gardens she has planted and cared for over many years as well as the gardens planted by her friends. One can feel the ripeness in the intricate blossoms that abound. Looking through the arched arbors and wrought iron gates we see old houses, barns and light-filled yards that create backdrops for these lovely plantings. Often an outdoor chair, watering can or sundial will hold our attention and lead us deeper into the landscape. Generous paint and brushwork that visibly moves around the canvas describe the four seasons; scenes that make these paintings exciting and compelling.

Join us for the opening reception of "Some of This and Some of That: Paintings by Ken Sahr"
Saturday, November 4 from 3-5 pm.
Hudson, NY – 510 Warren Street Gallery is pleased to present the paintings and drawings of Hudson artist Ken Sahr in a show titled, “Some of This and Some of That” which focuses on the artist’s continued interest in still-life, portraiture and landscape. The show begins on Friday, November 3rd and continues until Sunday, November 26. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, November 4th from 3 to 6 pm.

The paintings and drawings of cupcakes and ice-cream cones are portraits as much as still-life. These are representational pieces that reflect his interest in color, pattern, scale, and mood. Playing with scale, the larger works are more abstract and have the presence of cultural iconography. These are familiar objects that, when presented in exaggerated scale, take on monumental qualities and reference the artist’s love of Pop Art. The smaller pieces are more intimate and personal.

Since moving from Maine to Hudson about six years ago, the artist has continued to be fascinated by landscape painting and drawing, focusing on the area around the Hudson River Park in Hudson. His most recent landscape paintings are from memory and imagination, painted using a very limited palette of only titanium white, raw umber, and ultramarine blue. His drawings are done using compressed charcoal on vellum. Both his current paintings and drawings emphasize the moody and subdued colors of dusk.
