Salt is a staple for many. It has a unique ability to bring out the best flavor in most dishes. It also benefits our bodies in important ways. Salt is composed of 40% sodium and 60% chloride. Our bodies need sodium to maintain proper nerve and muscle function. That means some salt intake is necessary for our health.
Too much salt can harm your heart health, and most people eat too much salt. The daily recommended value of sodium is less than 2,300 milligrams per day, but the average American consumes around 3,400 milligrams of sodium per day. High-sodium diets are linked with an increased risk of high blood pressure, a key contributing factor to stroke and heart disease.

What happens during a Cardiac Arrest?
The heart is essential for the proper functioning of the body, consequently, it is essential for your life.
If the heart stopped beating, blood would not be able to reach the brain or other organs. When cardiac arrest occurs, the person can die within minutes.
Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency. You will be able to identify if a person is suffering from cardiac arrest or a heart attack when they suddenly fall and become unconscious (fainting), stop breathing, or their breathing is ineffective, they do not respond to screams or shakes from an assistant, or they lose their pulse.
Sudden cardiac arrests are generally caused by a problem in the heart's electrical system. This may be a consequence of coronary artery disease, a myocardial infarction or other heart problems.
At Modern Heart and Vascular, we lead in cardiac care with advanced treatments and expert cardiologists, ensuring top-quality care. From minimally invasive procedures to innovative therapies, we offer personalized solutions for your needs.
About 2.5 percent of Americans (many older adults) have heart valve disease. Approximately twenty-eight thousand people die annually from heart valve disease in the United States. In addition, mitral valve damage or deterioration is a frequent heart valve problem.
When a heart valve does not work correctly, it puts pressure on your heart because it must work harder. It can also cause less blood flow to your body.
It is common for individuals with heart valve disease to have no symptoms. But when the heart valve problem worsens, your heart beats harder to compensate for the reduced blood flow.

June is National Men's Health Month.
Men’s cardiovascular health is one of the most important aspects of their overall health and well-being. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cardiac disease causes one out of every four male deaths each year. Millions more have or are at risk of developing heart disease. In addition to death, heart conditions can cause serious complications and reduce your quality of life.
Some risk factors that particularly affect men include:
- Low testosterone
- Erectile dysfunction
- Stress
- Hypertension
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Excessive alcohol use
- Family history
Heart failure, a condition where the heart struggles to pump blood efficiently, affects a significant number of individuals in Houston, mirroring national trends. In the quest for innovative and non-invasive treatments, Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) has emerged as a beacon of hope for many patients experiencing heart failure.
EECP therapy works by increasing blood flow to the heart, significantly reducing heart failure symptoms, such as shortness of breath and fatigue, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life. This treatment involves using external cuffs on the legs to rhythmically compress the blood vessels, thereby boosting oxygen-rich blood back to the heart. The process is akin to having a “second heart,” working alongside the patient’s own to maximize blood circulation.
EECP is particularly beneficial as it can help create a natural bypass around narrowed or blocked arteries. Over time, treatment can lead to the development of new pathways for blood to flow, referred to as collateral circulation, essentially providing a long-term improvement in blood flow to heart muscle.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the blood, created by the liver and the foods you eat. Two lipoproteins carry your cholesterol, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is commonly referred to as bad cholesterol. LDL comprises the larger portion of your overall cholesterol count.
LDL is referred to as bad or unhealthy cholesterol because it contributes to atherosclerosis, which are fatty buildups in arteries. Atherosclerosis can increase the risk of heart attack, peripheral artery disease (PAD) and stroke because it narrows the arteries.
Here's what you can do lower you LDL Cholesterol.
Atherosclerosis occurs when a buildup of plaque causes narrowing of the arteries. Although we often think of atherosclerosis as a heart problem, it can affect any artery in the body.
This situation can cause a shortage of blood and oxygen in various tissues. Pieces of plaque may also break off, causing a blood clot. If the person does not treat atherosclerosis, he can suffer a myocardial infarction, a stroke or heart failure, among other conditions.
Most symptoms of atherosclerosis do not appear until a blockage occurs. Typical signs or symptoms are the following:
Between fifty and seventy-five percent of Americans eat less than the recommended daily amount of vitamin D, which is problematic, since a lack of it can cause numerous problems.
Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to hypertension and coronary heart disease. A study published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis , and Vascular Biology in 2008 concluded that low levels of vitamin D increased the risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD).
However, be sure to talk to your doctor before starting any supplement routine.
VARICOSE VEINS ARE HERIDITARY
Many individuals who suffer from varicose veins may wonder if they are hereditary. Unfortunately, like many genetic disorders, varicose veins are hereditary.
Your chance of getting varicose veins increases if a close relative has the condition, confirming a link between genetics and varicose veins.
If one of your parents suffers from varicose veins, you have a forty percent chance of inheriting them. If both parents suffer from them, your risk increases dramatically to ninety percent.
Having valves that do not work correctly or are too few is also a frequent problem that individuals may inherit.
Sometimes, you may be born with abnormalities in the vein wall. The resulting weakness may predispose the valves, leading to separation and cracking. When someone with malfunctioning valves stands up, blood flow goes in the wrong direction and flows down the superficial veins when it should flow toward the heart.
Then, pressure builds up in the superficial veins and causes varicosities.
A healthy lifestyle equals a healthy heart. Here are some heart healthy habits to improve your health.
THE MAIN CAUSE OF VARICOSE VEINS
Venous insufficiency, the result of damage to the veins in our legs, causes spider and varicose veins. In addition to being overweight or obese, many other variables may contribute to their development. These include age, genetics, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, smoking, inactivity, and high blood pressure.
As mentioned, abnormal blood flow within the veins happens when the small unidirectional valves malfunction. This situation usually occurs when the veins are overloaded. Damaged and stressed vein valves cannot effectively return the blood to the heart. Instead, blood begins to pool in some areas of your body and flows incorrectly.
The zones most frequently affected are your ankles, feet, and legs.
