Requirements:
1. Must be 40 years or older
2. No implants or breast surgery
3. Screening only (not diagnostic)
4. Patient must be able to stand and support her own weight

January Is Thyroid Awareness Month!

WHAT IS YOUR THYROID?
Your thyroid is a gland that sits on the front, bottom of your neck, and it is shaped like a butterfly. It controls the hormones that regulate your metabolism. The principal thyroid hormones are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) and are derived from the amino acid in iodine.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON THYROID DISEASES?
THYROID NODULES: A lump in the thyroid gland. GOITER: Enlargement of the thyroid. THYROIDITIS: Inflammation of the thyroid. HYPOTHYROIDISM OR HYPERTHYROIDISM: Not enough or too much thyroid hormone is produced. And THYROID CANCER.

WHAT DIAGNOSTIC TESTING CAN BE DONE FOR THYROID DISEASES?
In addition to a physical exam and blood tests, your doctor may also order a thyroid ultrasound, CT and MRI scans, a fine needle aspiration biopsy, or a radioactive iodine uptake test.

A THYROID ULTRASOUND can show the size of the gland as well as any lumps or nodules and can help classify if the thyroid is a solid mass or if it is fluid filled. A CT helps diagnose a goiter or large nodules. An MRI looks at the size and shape of the thyroid. And a FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION, or biopsy, can be preformed to help determine if any abnormalities are cancerous.

The symptoms of thyroid diseases vary, and many are associated with other issues. Or you may have no symptoms at all. Always be sure to be thorough and honest when discussing your symptoms with your health care professional.
