UAH Sigmas
The Alpha Sigma Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was originally founded in 1996 by six young male students on the campus of UAHuntsville.
After a heart-throbbing attempt to see the growth of another fraternity on the campus, the chapter ceased to become noted by the campus community. However, ten years later, three young men, Bro. For Our Black Business Spotlight, we’ll be Highlighting The Veggie
The Veggie is the one and only restaurant that offers 100% vegan food in the area while also giving the tastes and textures of familiar non-vegan foods. This completely flips the narrative of vegan food being bland and limited in options while also giving people who are new to vegan food or previously vegan a more inviting experience. The head chef, Adyre Mason, a UAH alumni and also a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority member , has been vegan for 9 years. She knows the struggles of finding a vegan restaurant and wants to make The Veggie as inviting as possible. She also has incorporated her family home cooking which she has drawn inspiration from her mother. The ingredients used at The Veggie are studied for their textures and health benefits to ensure a diverse and fitting menu. As of today, she is the only vegan chef in Alabama who has had the opportunity to be on the Beat Bobby Flay show which aired its first vegan episode on Food Network. She is leading the charge to represent the underrepresentation of vegans and is definitely making her mark as the only black business in its shopping district.
The Veggie also gives a student discount!

Last Friday, the brothers of ASA wore purple in support of the March of Dimes world prematurity day. This day brings awareness to infants who are born premature or before full term, which puts them at risk for lifelong health issues and mortality.

The Alpha Sigma Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. would like to bring awareness to the prematurity crisis during Prematurity Awareness Month. Each year in the U.S., 1 in 10 babies is born preterm. Prematurity affects too many moms and babies and is fueled significantly by disparities in our healthcare system, communities, and institutions. We all have a role to play in solving the prematurity crisis in the U.S. Take action now to improve outcomes for all moms and babies.
