I recently had a “big” birthday, got the shingles vaccine (and felt like hell, but I’ve had shingles and they are worse) and decided to open Athens, Alabama’s most bad ass vintage shop. Coming soon. Spread the word, please.

A throwback to my favorite little store counter. It had been tucked in a Tennessee barn and was the perfect habitat for dirt daubers. I still have it serving good duty as my bar in my little house.

When you clean out an old house in Tennessee and find a vintage snowmobile suit AND THEN IT SNOWS. And you’d just bought a pair of 60s motorcycle googles. Full disclosure, I teach school and wear this directing carline. Get a lot of looks.

Bigger than a hubcap, but more stylish.

Good vintage lighting is difficult to find and increasingly in demand. This Art Deco lamp, “The Hunter” is a new favorite.

A coworker and I had what was probably a ridiculously long conversation today about sofas. We couldn’t find one we liked for our old home years ago. We had one made, a brown linen tufted tuxedo that has only gotten better with age. It’s just funky and traditional enough to make the space.

Happy 199th birthday old girl. Gonna throw you a helluva party next year.

The history teacher (and nerd) in me loves this antique folk art piece of Mount Vernon. Painted canvas with applied wooden parts for the architectural details, limbs and twigs…and even little pieces of glass for the windows. Far better than any shoebox diorama I ever did in elementary school.

To re-neon it, and in what color…

A huge buying trip with these guys. My pile is not included in the pic and we somehow managed to get it all in the truck. We almost had to leave our luggage, and that would have been okay.

Three years ago I started the process of begging to come to Athens Alabama. They opened in a great, historic building this past week. The building needed some love, before and after pics included. To expedite the opening, I refinished the floors. The vision was historic hunting lodge. As beautiful as the space is, the food and cocktails are even better. They add dinner this week. Make plans to get by.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

My favorite girl only has a few months left of high school. And then she is going to the University of Alabama where she hopes to become the head football coach. 😬

On to Christmas.

Some people are good at math, others can play the piano. Maybe someone is athletic or is a great cook. My talent is turning every single piece of antique furniture into a bar. Sometimes talent just takes practice though.
