What can I expect during recovery from foot surgery?

Recovery after your foot surgery depends on the surgery performed, as well as your overall health. The team at SportsMED reviews the recovery process during your consultation, so you know what to expect.

In general, your recovery may include rest, use of crutches or other assistive devices to minimize weight-bearing, medication to alleviate pain, and physical therapy!

Why would I need hip surgery?

There are many hip conditions that may benefit from surgical intervention. Why you need hip surgery depends on your diagnosis, severity of your pain, and the effect your hip condition has on your quality of life!

In this role(s) you will screen patients before the MRI examination for any precautions and contraindications, prepare patients for the exam and explain the exam procedure, ensure scan(s) meet the minimum requirements for accuracy and readability to help physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patient’s injuries and illnesses, and maintain accurate records in our medical software system.

What is cartilage repair?

The cartilage that lines your joints is susceptible to injury and degeneration. Until recently, treatment for cartilage damage involved conservative methods such as medication, ice, physical therapy, rest, and cortisone shots. Surgical options include arthroscopic abrasion, laser treatments, and joint replacement.

Cartilage repair and transplantation is a fairly new treatment option for cartilage injuries and degeneration in the United States but has been in use in other countries for years.

During cartilage repair, your orthopedic surgeon harvests a sample of cartilage cells from your damaged tissue and sends the cells to the Genzyme lab in Boston, Massachusetts, to grow. The new cells are then transplanted back into your damaged cartilage.

Why might I need knee surgery?

Knee surgery might be necessary if you have an injury or joint deterioration that isn’t responding to other treatment methods.

Your knee is a strong but complex joint that enables you to walk, run, kneel, climb, and jump freely. Because so many activities place extreme stress on the knees, injuries are common.

Your knee can also suffer from degeneration that results in pain and loss of mobility. People who have knee problems can find it difficult to perform simple daily tasks.

Why would I need ankle surgery?

Though the team at SportsMED Orthopedic Surgery & Spine Center specializes in orthopedic surgery, they may not recommend ankle surgery initially. The team may first recommend conservative methods for your ankle condition, such as rest, physical therapy, and medication.

Some of the common ankle conditions SportsMED treats include:

- Sports injuries
- Tendinitis
- Arthritis

If conservative treatments fail to improve your ankle condition or your symptoms worsen, then ankle surgery may be recommended.
