4 years ago today, at Rockefeller Center, NYC, NY I asked the love of my life a very important question: would you like to go ice skating?

After, unbeknownst to Rachel, lugging her ice skates around New York for the better part of 6 hours in my backpack, because I knew she would NEVER use the rental skates, we passed by Rockefeller Center and she said, "oh look the ice rink is still open! They haven't closed for spring yet! Too bad... I don't have my skates."

That's when I made my move: I took my backpack from it's resting place, unzipped it and told her that she DID have her skates! So we walked down to the ticket and rental skate area (for me) and they told us,

"sorry we're closing to resurface the ice. It'll be about 45 minutes"

What?!

My plans, my spontaneity, my sails had no more wind. The surprise. The look on her face when I pulled the ice skates out. The excitement walking down the steps to the ticket counter. All gone as we walked back up to meet with the party that was with us.

Truth be told, I almost didn't go through with my proposal because I got so discouraged in that moment.

It's interesting how we think that the struggles, those moments that challenge our faith, are signs that maybe we shouldn't do what we're doing, but in reality, it's exactly what we should be doing, in spite of the struggle.

So we waited. And then, we skated.

10-15 minutes of agony, and I realized why my wife would only use her skates. See this first picture doesn't capture everything:

It doesn't capture the people around us staring (to my wife's dismay)

It doesn't capture the lady behind us about to fall.

It doesn't capture the blood soaking my socks from the skates digging into my ankles.

A struggle is guaranteed, but the end result is generally something very beautiful.

Soooo, I went through with and yes, I did have to stop and get a bandage wrap to stop my foot from bleeding and continuing to rub skin away as we walked through New York, and those skates went again into my backpack for the next 5 hours, but I also solidified my commitment to my life partner. My love. My bride. My Rachel.

3 days in and we're UNDER CONTRACT! Started out as for sale by owner, but wasn't getting any traffic! Our marketing is top knotch so I knew we could get them more money and a quick sale, soooo we did! Congrats to my sellers!

But in all seriousness:

I couldn't be more thankful to my wife, Rachel for trusting me with our livelihood and encouraging me to leave my guaranteed salary to dive headfirst into a new career that was solely based on my performance, and my willingness to go the extra mile. I also want to thank God for waking me up every day and getting me through the times where reaching for it just wasn't enough and onto the next phone call or the serendipitous conversation that just worked in our favor.

AND IT'S SOLD! So excited for the VanDykes! Thankful they allowed me to help them relocate to be closer to their family!
