Our Story

The first time “Richards Lighting” appeared in public was on the side of a which traveled back and forth from Birmingham to Huntsville in the spring and summer of 1963.

Richard and Barbara Lapidus had made the life-changing decision to open a new business, and, on July 6, 1963, relocated to Huntsville in order to bring this vision to life. They were, at the same time, bringing a new child to life, Bradley Stephen Lapidus. Jeff, their three-year-old toddler was delighted to be moving to Jeffrey Drive, convinced the street was named for him.

But that’s getting ahead of the story.

In the process of starting a business from scratch, Richard had to find and either rent or build a building. After almost being side-tracked by a real estate agent, Richard found a lot on Memorial Parkway, a w**d field across the street from Traylor Island, and owned by Jack and Dick Hay.

It was a bit far out of town in that year, but Richard thought it had possibilities and convinced the Hays to take a chance on a complete unknown. He sketched a 60’ x 100’ building on a napkin, shook hands, and the deal was sealed.

On September 27, 1963, Richards Lighting Distributors, Inc. formally opened for business.

Merchandise came in the back door and quickly flew out the front. Richard ran faster. The business grew. Besides growing the business, the family grew by one more son, Michael, born in 1966.

During the first 15 years, the building was added onto twice. But rumors of a new highway began. If built, the road would cross the parkway, obliterating the Richards location.

Hedging their future, the Lapidus’s purchased a tract of land on a newly opened block of University Drive. It was a large w**d field with no building on it.

Despite uncertainty about being forced to move, the business had outgrown its building on the Parkway and a decision was made to build the company’s own structure. In October 1978, the Lapidus family and business associates proudly cut the ribbon to open the new Richards Lighting home.

Lapidus family members have all been involved at one time or another. Brad joined the business after college in 1985, Mike in 1988, and Jeff in 1991. Through the years the business has been recognized locally and nationally. In 1980, Richards Lighting was the cover story for “ Home Lighting and Accessories” the premier trade magazine devoted to the lighting industry. In 1990, that same magazine featured Richards as “The store that has everything”.

Today Brad serves as president, Mike as vice-president, Barbara as secretary/treasurer, and ownership has been transferred to the younger generation who continues to follow priority number 1 - “SERVING THE CUSTOMER”

Richard gives much credit to the Richards employees for the continuing success of the business. “The dedication and loyalty has been one of the great rewards of being in business”.

On June 19, 2012, we lost our co-founder and mentor - he will be missed by the entire community, but his legacy will continue!
