History Lesson | Music Boxes
The music box, the first successful device that could play a musical tune, was probably invented in Switzerland around 1770. Early music boxes were designed to play music using flat metal prongs that were plucked by a revolving metal cylinder. Eventually music box makers developed a flat disc to play the music.

At a time when digital music downloads, CDs, and records were non-existent, the music box was a true phenomenon. It allowed people to experience the joy of music wherever, whenever. The music box was a popular household instrument from about 1810 until the early 20th century, when the player piano and the phonograph rendered it obsolete.

We see a lot of glass items pass through the store. Every now and then, something makes us take pause. This gorgeous hand painted Fenton glass elephant trinket box did just that. Fenton, you really do know your glass.

HISTORY LESSON | The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 by Frank L. Fenton and his brother John W. Fenton in an old glass factory building in Martins Ferry, Ohio. They began by painting decorations on glass blanks made by other glass manufacturers. Soon, being unable to get the glass they needed, they decided to produce their own glass. The first glass from the new Fenton factory in Williamstown, West Virginia, was made on January 2, 1907.

Frank's desire to develop new and unusual colors helped to keep Fenton in the forefront of the handmade art glass industry. During the years from 1905 to the 1920's, Fenton design was influenced by the artists at Tiffany and Steuben. In late 1907, Fenton introduced "Iridescent" glass. This glass, now known as "Carnival" glass, is a popular collectible today.

During the 1930's and 1940's, Fenton produced practical items, such as mixing bowls and tableware to get through the depression and WWII shortages. They continued working on developing a wide array of new colors.

For more than a century, Fenton developed new colors and patterns, including items enhanced with hand-painted floral decorations and 22k gold accents. Fenton also manufactured custard glass, milk glass, chocolate glass, opalescent glass, and stretch glass among others.

In 2011, Fenton ceased traditional glassmaking at the Williamstown factory and begins producing handcrafted art glass jewelry using many of the classic Fenton colors and glassmaking techniques.
