Purging vs Breakouts

What is purging and why is it a good thing?
Purging happens when we use a product that stimulates cell turnover. Products can include AHAs such as glycolic acid and services like chemical peels or even a facial with exfoliation. This speeds up cell regeneration, exfoliates and sloths off dead skin cells so new skin cells can form. While this process creates brighter, smoother skin, it can also bring up little marks resembling a breakout. Purging is usually not painful, doesn’t last long and doesn’t leave a mark behind.

Breakouts are more complicated. Breakouts happen when the hair follicle is clogged by oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. Breakouts last longer, can be inflamed or painful and usually leave a mark (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) or scar. Breakouts can be caused by your diet, hormones, dirty phone or pillowcases, not cleansing properly, using the wrong products for your skin, and more.

Microneedle Eye Patch $12

Only 3 ingredients!

Sodium Hyaluronate – HA that can enter the deeper layers of your skin, attracts moisture, reduces inflammation, plumps & minimizes lines

3-O Ethyl Ascorbic Acid – Derivative of Vitamin C (more stable than ascorbic acid), fades discoloration, wrinkle reduction & firming

Directions:
Apply to clean dry skin

But I do try and teach her the importance of taking care of her skin. Teens in general can struggle with balancing everything they deal with. They usually don’t know the right way to take care of their skin and honestly products made for teens is awful! The marketing sells you drying alcohols that strip the skin of its natural oils so it’s actually over producing oil that keeps acne returning!! This can be devastating for a teen. Seems like a dead end road!!

😵PLEASE!! For the love of your skin health, please don’t self microneedle or use dermarollers at home!

Hear me out...

I know professional services can be expensive. Trust me! I try really hard to be reasonable with my pricing for that reason. But there is a reason behind the prices!

1. Quality products. Think about it. You are puncturing tiny holes in your skin and what’s going in those holes play a HUGE part in your results. As a licensed esthetician, we have access to better, quality medical grade products that are formulated for these services and have proven results! Also, these products provide a better glide. Microneedling and dermarolling can tear your skin!! If you’re not using the right products, the needles can catch on the skin and create tears in the skin!
2. Dermarollers weren’t not made to be disposable! This means every time the little needles puncture the skin, it’s picking up tiny pieces of dead skin cells, bacteria, possibly even blood and you are transferring it all over your face. Then you’re supposed to use it again and again?? 🤢 Gross! This can lead to serious infections! It is impossible to get the entire roller perfectly clean and sterile. Dead skin, dirt, bacteria etc will build up and you will spread it over the next uses.
3. The science behind Microneedling! You should really be trained in knowing what is really happening when you microneedle. Do you know what tip is for what? What speed to use?? DEPTH! Do you know how deep you should go in each area of the face?? Again... this can cause tearing of the skin! It can also cause the opposite reaction on what you are trying to achieve!
4. You don’t need to bleed when Microneedling!! You shouldn’t actually bleed! I’ve seen so many tiktoks and ig posts of blood smeared all over the face. Which makes people think this is normal and what it should look like. Pin point bleeding is all the blood you want to see. Blood does nothing to the skin. It is not the same as PRP. So going deep and causing bleeding is doing more harm than good. You have reached the epidermal layer of the skin and this is where scar tissue can form!

If you use these at home please please stop. Unless you really do know what you are doing. Again I know the services are expensive but treating at home and causing damage to your skin will be even more costly to fix.

🧖🏼‍♀️ As far as CeraVe, Cetaphil etc.... These aren’t necessary bad products. They just aren’t “active”. If you are trying to treat a skin concern, you probably won’t get the best results using these BUT they are great for more sensitive skin or skin that doesn’t need a lot of active ingredients for corrections. Dermatologist recommend these products for that reason, but as an esthetician we like to use products to correct skin concerns.

💆🏼‍♀️ ProActiv is known to be very drying to the skin. That’s why it works well. It’s literally drying up all the extra oil PLUS natural oil in your skin. If you use proactiv, be sure you use a really good moisturizer! I like to think of proactiv as like a bandaid. It can help while using the product, but when you stop using it you might have more or different skin concerns than you had before.

🧼 The almighty makeup wipes. While it isn’t the end of the world if you use them, they aren’t cleaning your skin like you might think. And some brands have pretty abrasive material that can scratch the skin. I am guilty of using makeup wipes myself! Just be sure you are double cleansing with a regular face wash after!
