After surgery, you are at great risk for blood clots🩸

Why❓
The main reason for blood clots after surgery is due to inactivity. Since you are less mobile after surgery, blood tends to collect in your legs causing decrease blood flow back to your heart and increasing your risk for clots. Also, during surgery your body may release collagen, debris and/or fat into your bloodstream. Because of this blood thickens and causes clots.

Risk factors include:
⚠️ decreased activity, mobility
⚠️ smoking
⚠️ history of blood clots (DVT)
⚠️ disorders that affect your blood or veins
⚠️ certain medications (birth control or hormone therapy)
⚠️ increased age (weakened muscle tone)

Signs and symptoms include: 🤒
🔹 swelling, pain in one or both legs
🔹 shortness of breath
🔹 chest pain
🔹 increased heart rate
🔹 dizziness
🔹 fainting
🔹 coughing up blood
🔹 weakness in the face, arm or legs

HOW TO PREVENT❓
🔸 review medical history and current medications with Surgeon PRIOR to your surgery
🔸 increase mobility (it is so important to get up and move after surgery even if you don’t feel up to it)
🔸 NO smoking
🔸 your Surgeon may prescribe a blood thinner such as lovenox or warfarin
