BUSKIRK CHUMLEY THEATER OCT 13 AT 4 PM

“Cruces de Caminos/Intersections: Celebrating Movements of the Diaspora” tells stories of migration and lived experiences from Latinx and African diasporic perspectives. The concert will include an opening performance by the Indiana University African American Dance Company directed by Baba Stafford C Berry Jr., followed by a full-length performance by Indianapolis-based Seda Negra/Black Silk Dance Company directed by Iris Rosa. Through a fusion of contemporary and traditional dance forms, poetry, and music, the concert presents a creative and innovative relationship between Latinx and Black diasporic dance, spirituality, and culture. The event will also include a post-performance dialogue with audiences and performers.

WALDRON ARTS CENTER- 6 PM

The OSOGBO: Art & Heritage exhibition closing reception features some of the movement’s most prominent artists, including Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, Rufus Ogundele, Chief Jimoh Buraimoh, Twins Seven-Seven, and founder Susanne Wenger. The Osogbo School of Art was spearheaded by two European artists, Ulli Beier and Susanne Wenger, in the early 1960s as a cultural response to the colonialism and appropriation so blatantly apparent in the European modernism of the 20th century. In an effort to highlight the strength, beauty, and originality of African art, Beier and Wenger, along with renowned Nigerian playwright, Duro Ladipo, started the Mbari Mbayo Art Club, which directly led to the founding of the Osogbo School of Art.

The reception is free and open to the public. For more information, click on www.nolaworld.org

✨We want to give a special shout out to a special person on her birthday 🎉 Cherese Dillman!✨ She’s our lovely Assistant to the Director, Seda Negra/Black Silk Dance Company, and Instructor of Beginning Tap

Here’s what Iris Rosa has to say about Cherese…

“As Assistant to the Director, Cherese just shows commitment and enthusiasm to developing the company and pushing it forward to be a viable entity, not only in performance but also community. When she started her tap classes, she took it upon herself to communicate with a particular group that she was part of, mothers in the Irvington area, because she also has two children so that’s how she’s connected with people in her community and the schools. She has skill in the tap genre and she wanted to offer people in the community an opportunity to come in and learn tap dancing and increase their knowledge about dance, rhythm, and community. She teaches at a level where all people learn so much. She understands the participants, the students that come to her class. She’s genuine, authentic, and listens to them. Yet she’s firm and gentle. She comes with creative ideas during rehearsals, ideas to push forward SNBS. The way that she communicates with other dancers is very genuine and it shows the love that she has for the dance discipline. She’s a fantastic performer in her delivery. I heard a lot about her expression and dedication. That even comes from people in other groups, like Salsa Pro. She’s a mother, a wife, a teacher, she’s a professional, and can navigate through all of that. I want people to know her from that particular perspective.”

Thank you Cherese for all that you do for the studio and our community!
