Jimmy Guilford started his career singing doo-wop on the streets of Indiana Avenue. His talents would eventually carry him to the Apollo Theater in New York, the nightclubs of Las Vegas, and the recording studios of Detroit, where Jimmy cut a series of classic soul singles.
Guilfordโs career in Indianapolis spanned over six decades of music making. He worked with some of the greatest music legends in Indianapolis, from the jazz icon Wes Montgomery to the rock and roll star Thurston Harris.
Weโll share a 2019 interview Guilford recorded with WFYIโs Kyle Long, along with rare singles he recorded with the Lamplighters and Four Sounds.

Dear family, friends, and fans of Russell Malone,
We at The Jazz Kitchen and the Indianapolis jazz community are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of guitar great Russell Malone. An amazing guitarist and equally kind, upbeat, and vibrant individual, he touched many lives through his music and attitude. His music and creativity will live on.
As an admirer of Indianapolis great Wes Montgomery, Russell frequently visited Indianapolis. In 2016 and again in 2023, he took part in Indy Jazz Fest festivities honoring Wes' legacy. Last year was extra special as Russell spent the week performing shows around the Midwest, dining with us, and getting to know the fine people of Indy.
Russell also visited several times with his projects, always leaving a memorable musical and personal impression. He engaged his audiences, always including them in his remarkable artistry. His live performance of "Alfie" here at The Jazz Kitchen is one of those musical moments that remains fresh in our mindsโa testament to his artistic greatness and impact on his audience. We are better for it.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his wife, family, friends, and all those who cherished him during this challenging time.
R.I.P. Russell Malone
