Unlike Pinocchio’s Geppetto, the trick to making a toy waddle, chomp, or thump isn’t magic, but simple mechanics. This beaver an easier project, but despite its simplicity, the design still delights both young children and the young at heart. Thanks to a cam hidden within the solid-wood body, the tail rises and falls as it’s rolled in either direction.

Turn for Troops is right around the corner! Participate at your local Woodcraft and help handcraft wooden writing pens (no experience necessary) to send to both active duty service members and those in hospitals or rehabilitation centers. Turned pens are packaged and sent around the globe, with cards and information about how the pens were made.

Turn for Troops is a national initiative started by Woodcraft in 2004 to bolster the spirit of active duty and rehabilitating United States military service members. Woodcraft stores across the country host turning events (typically over Veterans Day weekend) to assist volunteers in handcrafting wooden writing pens, which are then sent to the troops with personal notes from the turners.

Joinery Jigs, November 19 - Learn different types of joinery jigs to help you build a strong finished piece.

Router Jigs and Templates, November 16 - Get started with a router templates, and create custom jigs and fixtures for your shop.

An all-purpose hand plane, the No. 5, or jack, plane will perform almost any job you might need done, while providing you with experience and feed back to help you pick your next plane. The 14” length makes the No. 5 useful for stock removal, smoothing, shooting miters, and jointing smaller work.

The half-lap dovetail is a remarkably strong and versatile joint.

Its most common application is joining top rails to the sides of a carcase or to the legs of a table. Due to its wedge shape, the dovetail is extremely effective at locking parts together. In fact, because of its great mechanical integrity, a well-fitted, unglued half-lap dovetail can be an ideal joint for knockdown furniture.
