🏀On March 20, 1954 with an enrollment of only 161, Milan High School became the smallest school ever to win a single-class state basketball title in Indiana, beating heavily favored Muncie Central High School, 32-30 at Butler Fieldhouse (now Hinkle Fieldhouse). The game was tied 26-26 after 3 quarters and with just a few seconds left and the game tied at 30 Milan’s Bobby Plump hit a 14-footer from the right side as time expired to seal the win, denying the Bearcats a 5th state title. The IHSAA broke a longstanding tradition and awarded the Trester Award for mental attitude, sportsmanship, and character to a member of the winning team, Bobby Plump. Milan’s team and town were the inspiration for the classic 1986 film Hoosiers. Over 40,000 people descended on Milan (population: 1,150) the next day as the team returned home from Indianapolis, lining State Road 101 for 13 miles to congratulate the Milan team.🏀
“Ya’ll got to see it. It’s going to be great.”
Will we see you this Saturday in Milan for the big 70th anniversary event of the ‘54 win? We can’t wait!
