Friends, I heard these words with my very own ears when the educator spoked to the parent about her child's behavior, and it nearly broke my heart. It pains me to put myself in this child's shoes. Being ignored, shunned, and isolated for having lagging social and self-regulation skills. School is hard enough when you're different. We shouldn't have to make children feel rejected and worthless in order to get them meet our expectations. Feeling safe and accepted is a NEED, and it shouldn't have to be earned.

What I had to remind myself of is that both the teacher and the parent wanted the same thing - for this young boy to meet classroom expectations and not disrupt the learning others.

But there is a better way to help students learn skills and meet expectations than by ignoring or otherwise trying to "motivate" compliance by offering rewards or imposing consequences.

I know all too well the feeling of just wanting the school year to be over so that you can "celebrate" having survived (barely) another year. While it may feel too late to ask for an evaluation or make changes to your child's behavior plan, its not.

There are currently thirteen categories that may qualify a child for special education and/or related services. Some examples include: Autism, Specific Learning Disability, Other Health Impairment, Speech and Language Impairment, and Emotional Disturbance. There are numerous special education programs and services that can be offered to support students with disabilities. Some examples of these services include: specialized academic instruction, speech and language services, occupational therapy, behavior supports, or, a 1:1 instructional assistant.

Even if a child does not qualify for special education services, they may be eligible for 504 plan accommodations under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), which may include extra time to complete assignments, modified assignments, additional adult support, preferential seating, etc.
