We welcome everyone who is interested in, or curious about Korea.
The winning team will be awarded a pre-paid 8-day long trip to Korea, along with the opportunity to perform onstage at the K-Community Festival in November.
Joseon-Pop is a fusion of the words "Joseon" and "Pop.", blending traditional Korean music with contemporary popular styles.
Akdan Gwangchil’s (ADG7) is an example of Joseon pop, featuring a lively and rhythmic song that provides comfort by addressing the hardships of daily life and encouraging the release of worries,
it is inspired by the traditional Korean folk song "Neunsiltaryeong."

🔊2024 Korean Poetry Recitation Contest
The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (KCCLA), in collaboration with KSICUSA, is pleased to announce the 2024 Korean Poetry Recitation Contest. This special event is open to Korean learners (including college students as well as the general public) from across the United States, whose native language IS NOT Korean.
Each entrant will choose one poem from the list (appropriate to their class level) and submit a video of themselves reciting the poem on-screen, in Korean (please see the complete instructions for details at https://www.kccla.org/koreanlanguageprogram/contest/ ).
The video must be your own original work, including your recitation of the poem in Korean and acknowledgments/citations of any images, videos, or music that are copyrighted and/or not yours.
We have prepared over $5,000 worth of prizes.
Have fun, don't feel pressured, and good luck!!
We will be accepting video submissions by email until Friday, September 20, at 11:59 (PDT).

🍉Summer Cultural Class
At the Irvine King Sejong Institute, the “Sip & Paint” cultural class was held.
To welcome summer, the students studied with teacher Suzi Kim to beautifully draw 'Soguado' with a watermelon, a type of folk painting 'Minwha'.
It was an exciting time to experience the world of Korean folk painting 'Minwha Soguado' while enjoying delicious drinks and snacks.

🎊The story of Irvine King Sejong Institute's spring semester closing ceremony and Open House event
Irvine King Sejong Institute held the spring semester closing ceremony and open house.
We made the traditional lunch box seen in the 'Squid Game' series and ate it together for lunch.
Participants also participated in fun activities such as viewing an exhibition of Korean traditional cultural items, experiencing wearing Hanbok, and making bookmarks with pretty calligraphy writing.
Lastly, we had time to make Cucumber Sobagi, one of the Korean kimchi. 🥒🥒
It was a meaningful time to enjoy interesting and diverse Korean culture.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the event.

✒A writing contest was held at Irvine King Sejong Institute. The six students moved the hearts of the judges by expressing their experiences related to Korea in honest and well-structured writing.

The writing contest and speech contest will be held at King Sejong Institute again this year.
This time, speech contest will be held in a hybrid - Zoom and in-person.
We encourage the Lower-level students participate. It is such a good chance to practice public speaking in Korean. Also you will receive a participation prize.
In the future, you will be the winner and then be invited to Korea. This will be a great opportunity for your Korean to improve in the future.

< Korean domestic lifestyle and culture; Making a small folding screen >
During the last culture class of the spring semester at Irvine King Sejong Institute, we created a beautiful folding screen by choosing one of the old Korean paintings, Four Gentlemen (paintings of plum blossoms, orchids, chrysanthemums, and bamboo in traditional Korean painting) and Chochungdo (paintings of plants and insects). We were able to experience Korea's beautiful family life and culture by making decorative folding screens.

🍲In the third cultural class of the spring semester at Irvine King Sejong Institute, we studied History of Bulgogi and the process making Bulgogi. When the bulgogi was ready, we enjoyed it with rice. It was a very yummy time!

Speech & Writing Preliminary Contest Guide
1. Event Date & Place:
* Speech contest: When: 6/15. 10:00 am (Saturday)
Where: Cypress community center in Irvine(255 Visions, Irvine, CA 92620)
as well as through a Zoom (simultaneously cast)
• Implemented into two stages- Lower speech level (Beginner 1 - 4) and Upper speech level
(Beginner 5 and above)
* Writing contest: When: 6/14. 6pm (Friday) Where: via Zoom only
• Implemented into two stages- Lower speech level (Beginner 1 - 4) and Upper speech level
(Beginner 5 and above)
• Immediately after the contest starts, take a photo of the manuscript written in real time and
send it.
2. Competition format: In-person and Zoom real-time video competition for Speech contest.

3. Application
Applicants should submit the application to his/her teacher by May 18th.
Applicants may get advice on contest material from his/her teacher up to 3 times before the
competition.
4. Eligibility to participate
Current spring semester students (those whose parents do not speak Korean as their mother
tongue)
5. Theme:
• For the speech contest: You may choose one of the following.
1) 내가 가장 멋있었던 순간 The moment when I looked coolest
2) 내가 경험한 특별한 한국문화 Unique Korean culture that I had experienced
• For the writing contest
1) 한국어를 배우며 얻은 것 Something I have attained while taking Korean language
class beside knowledge on Korean
2) 한국의 첫인상과 이미지 Your first impression and image of Korea
6. Presentation time limit
• For the speech contest: 1~4 minutes
• For the writing contest: less than 4 pages official paper provided by KAC (200~800 syllables)
7. Awards:
1) Outstanding Contestants selected from the local preliminary contest will receive a certificate
and a prize.
2) All contestants will receive a small gift from Irvine Sejong Institute.
3) Top 2 contestants (speech and writing total score) will be invited to Korea for 2024 Korean
Cultural Experience Program for King Sejong Institute Learners in October 2024.
4) You may be selected to participate in the final contest in Korea.
5) You may have privilege to study Korean at Korean universities among the final winners from
the contest in Korea.

😊 News about cultural classes at Irvine King Sejong Institute, making bookmarks with Minwha.
Irvine King Sejong Institute's first culture class of the spring semester was held.
Students learned about Minwha, then colored the Minwhas with their own feelings and personalities and completed the bookmarks by writing their favorite Korean words and their names on the bookmarks with a brush pen.
It was a meaningful opportunity to have wonderful bookmarks containing the sentiments of Korean culture.

* Description: In April, full of the scent of spring, Irvine King Sejong Institute opens the first cultural class of the spring semester as an in-person class. The topic of the first culture class is making bookmarks with ‘Minhwa’ on them. 'Minhwa' is a traditional Korean painting that is colorful and can capture the humor and personality of the person who paints it. Come to our culture class and make your own bookmark with a Korean ‘Minhwa’, your name and your favorite Korean word. All materials needed to make folk painting bookmarks are provided by Irvine King Sejong Institute.
However, if you prepare your own sharpened colored pencils and thin colored markers, you will be able to create even more beautiful folk paintings.

HANGEUL WALL PROJECT: Things I Love to Talk About
Join us in creating the world’s largest Hanguel Wall in New York!
In September 2024, the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), in collaboration with
globally renowned artist Ik-Joong Kang, will unveil “HANGEUL WALL” immortalizing the
wisdom and experiences of people around the world in the atrium of the KCCNY. For this
ambitious project, we are launching an intriguing website (www.hangeulwall.org) where participants can create their own artworks embodying their life philosophies under the theme of
“Things I Love to Talk About”. Among them, 1,000 beautiful pieces will be selected to be transformed into the Hangeul Wall.
Numerous celebrities, including Korean actress Han Hyo-joo and Lee Hanee have joined the project to share their thoughts and wisdom with the world. This is a unique opportunity to imprint your legacy on a cultural milestone—the “HANGEUL WALL”.

🎵Second Month LA Concert ‘A Pansori Night with Second Moon’
Date: Monday, April 15, 2024
To commemorate Asian Heritage Month (AAPI) in May, the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles (Director Jeong Sang-won) will hold the "A Pansori Night with Second Moon" concert at Ari Hall on the 3rd floor of the cultural center at 7 p.m. on April 15.
This event is one of the western US tours of the fusion band 'Second Moon', which is gaining popularity by performing various Korean drama insert songs. 'Second Moon', which has always pursued experiments with various musical genres, is a group representing various races and cultures. It was planned as an opportunity to showcase cultural diversity in LA.
