Opinion
Economic growth and development are definitely not the same concepts. Concepts are derived from objective, realistic and objective community life experiences. My point of departure in this discussion is to underscore the importance of mindsets and development. Like the proverbial chicken and the yoke, does the focus on economic growth translate to national and economic development and national development as a whole? At this juncture of our political and economic development, it’s important to begin to interrogate ourselves, if we have the mindsets that economic development could stand upon, or on the other hand, does our mindsets permits the kind of development we are anticipating without a critical evaluation of these mindsets? While economic growth and economic development simultaneously can spark off national development, I’m not convinced that the mindsets of investors attract mindsets that is less of compassion, empathy and trust. Additionally, ethics of business, individual mindsets or community mindsets must attract one another, in ways that tourism and investments can be evaluated, assessed and independent decision and judgement made whether or not to engage your community and invest in it. Tourism and investment decisions are products of rational thinking and involves choices. All over the world tourism is known to boost economic growth and development, however they are not in isolation of human capital development and planning. Tourists and investors are prone to stable, trusting and peaceful communities. It is therefore no a surprise that investors and tourists are more likely to spend time to conduct research on where to invest there time and money. Similarly, tourists would rationally make the choice of engaging in trusting communities as opposed to taking the risk of engaging in dangerous communities.
The aforementioned assertion is a fundamentally mindsets issues, and thus cognitive issues. The concept of development overtime have been skewed narrowly to mean economic growth. Unfortunately, human capital that can’t be quantified in monetary terms are often excluded from this definition and the problem is that, it does not help us in truly determining what we mean or need to develop. For instance, there are tonnes of human capital in Nigeria that have not been turned into development, and as such not fully developed. How can we harness these non monetary human capital for development? Tourists and investors to this country should know us for our humanity; genuine love and affection, trust, empathy, compassion, selflessness, respect, dignity, hard-work, resilience, family, brotherly and sisterly-ness, community sense, honesty, dedication etc. All of these are fundamentally related to mindsets, our perceptions of ourselves and of others. Tourists and investors look at these things when making rational decisions. Fundamentally too, capital is unlikely to reside in communities that is less compassionate and unpredictable, no wonder violent communities are avoided for more stabled and peaceful ones.
My point here is this, while development is conceived primarily as economic growth, we seemed to have ignored our human potentials and our human values and rich human capital and have compartmentalized it differently from economic development. We have compromised our humanity as capital for investors and tourism, and must begin to reassess the capital and rebuild them. Development, holistically encompasses economic development which implies how economic growth is utilized to improve human life and wellbeing. How has economic growth scaled up our development in ways that advances our potentials vice versa? Truly, but unfortunately, our history is replete with history of economic growth that have not benefited our people realistically. The consequence of decades of economic growth with out development have led to pervasive and chronic lack of infrastructure, the frustration have led to traumatic experiences and consequently our resilience. Incidentally, living under stressful conditions reduces individual and community resilience.
But all hope is not lost, we can revive our human potentials, community values, by reinventing and rethinking development that’s consistent with our goal of development by integration the development of human capital and economic growth. This requires leadership, training and the will to implement insights from trainings. Definition or conceptualization of development that leaves out human capital potential is incomplete and inadequate in addressing our current situation. What this does is that it provide opportunity for organizational leaders and manages to take to human potential and capital seriously.
To conclude this discussion, and going back to the chicken and yoke metaphor, it’s insufficient to see economic growth solely as the basis of development. Human mindset as a function of community value play significant part of development as a whole and it’s a mistake to attempt to increase growth in monetary terms at the expense of human capital and values. An integrated approach is proposed, where human mindsets is consciously developed through leadership and organization program design. I believe integration of these disjointed pieces will encourage overtime and will help in a change of mindsets and help in the rethink and shift perceptions that can support investment and tourism in our communities.
Dr. Rashid Raji
I’m delighted to partner with the Nigerian hotel and tourism family. As a partner and stakeholder in Nigeria’s development, my organization is focused on development from the perspectives of community resilience, empowerment and social change. Our mission is future that is free from trauma and psychosocial problems across communities in Nigeria. Talking about trauma, resilience and change, and an organization we take trauma experiences of families seriously. Our approach of intervention is supported by trauma research and we focus intervention on changing the trauma experiences that have been repressed and denied for decade. Trauma focused interventions is largely ignored in our development trajectory. Sadly, our development trajectories have focused primarily on material and objectives matter despite the traumatic experiences that majority of our people have acclimatized and are accustomed. Important changes and effective change must simultaneously begin to happen by changing how we view development. In the process of achieving nationhood, development, justice, equity and representation Nigerians have been subjected to needless violence and traumatic experiences, many of these destructive impacts of trauma experiences have been suppressed and normalized as the “Nigerian way of doing things”. Unfortunately, this denial and projections of our collective lack of progress on past history continues to create unaddressed gaps on the effects of exposures to psychological and physical violence on collective psyche and ability to move on with implications for development.
A large body of studies on trauma have linked relational trauma impact on children and their children to their children and the circle continues in to generational trauma. Other studies have demonstrated that resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks has limit. The idea that Nigerians are invincible is limited to the extent to which mental health or psychosocial well-being tolerates stressors from the communities. We should not forget that businesses are located in communities and the health of businesses is largely dependent on the health of the community. The symbiotic relationship between the community and business is critical for the cyclical relationship. The implication of repressed trauma symptoms often re-emerge as hyperactive, hyperarousal, aggression, depersonalization, depression, anxiety, and several epidemiological studies have linked trauma symptoms to several medical conditions and high mortality rates. Family systems as the bedrock of all communities and nations has been on the attack when society get disrupted. According to social disorganization theory family systems become direct victims of social disruption because of the disruption of the symbiosis of family connections, relationships and interdependence.
In our history, the family system has weakened by decade of economic injustice, political violence and pervasive violence. Unfortunately, the violence continues to live with us in our intrapersonal reactions and interpersonal relationships. It has impacted group relationships and sadly our personal and national security is affected because policy and intervention is yet to address the psychological and traumatic impacts of decades of violence.
At CWAAF we take the experiences of trauma on development and progress seriously and our goal is to help change perceptions of organizations by encouraging organization and individual change by improving trauma symptoms that are barriers to family and community resilience.
Tourism and development thrives in atmosphere of stabled economies and communities. The family and community systems and economic development are intertwined realities. Economic growth without the development of the human capacity through the resolution of repressed trauma has the potential to disrupt economic achievement.
CWAAF will help the promotion of businesses and tourism in Nigeria through social change program at the community levels, build capacity that support community wellness. We are proud to be associated with this community.

MY OPINION IS FOR THE NIGERIANS TO WORK TOGETHER FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ALL ESPECIALLY OUR BROTHERS & SISTERS FROM THE NORTH, I WANT ALL NIGERIANS TO READ THESE TWO NOTES AND VENT OUT YOUR OWN OPINION:
Mohammed Ali Ndume A SENATOR FROM NORTH EAST

NORTH: The Making Of Another Generation In Poverty
I'm still on it in same passion that the next generation of Northerners escape the poverty coming. The passion for politics and the "sweet" wave of packages that come with it: compensations, settlements, appointments, loyalty and sycophancy, zoning, rotation don't generate anything for competitive wealth creation. I still fear the the North is producing just the next generation of politicians and their blind miscreants. The love for public/civil service has done same. Its a region of ex-generals, ex-Perm Secs, Directors; ex-govs, ex-Heads of State--too many to count. Yes, welcome to the home of poverty. In same country, the other region is producing just the next generation of global competitors in Music and
Entertainment, Sports, Aviation, Pharmaceuticals, Imports,
Banking, Telecom. This is a region where one state is owning Seven private universities. Welcome to Southern Nigeria, home to the Wizkids, P-Squares, Mikel Obis, Innosons, Chimamanda Adichies, Ramsey Noahs, Tiwa Savages, Yemi Alades. Welcome to the next generation of
leaders who wont become ex-this, ex-that. These guys live
on even after their deaths.
Last night, Africa celebrated a generation of soccer stars of
global outlook. 10 trophies at the CAF AWARDS 2016,
Nigeria alone picked Four - all four went to Southern boys and girls. Northern boys and girls (me inclusive), were spectators of he event of the celebration of young Nigerians whose families will not see poverty. Yet, they dont have political connections; and would not wait for the next four years to vote a favourable political party that will appoint their political gods into boards, so that their CVs would be considered, and their loyalty to a certain political god will
pay. Imagine.
Last night, the world celebrated Super Falcons striker Asisat
Oshoala (a southerner) as the Women’s Player of the Year, while the Super Falcons who won the Africa Women Championship for the eight time were crowned the Women National Team of the Year. Super Falcons has become home to Southern girls only. Northern girls dont get the platform to develop soccer talents -- the leadership here
doesnt take talents and creativity as anything. The
leadership in my North loves politics only. The leadership is zero fa.
Last night, the world was there when Kelechi Iheanacho (a southerner) was also crowned the Most Promising Talent, beating another southerner, Oghenekaro Etebo, and three
other contenders.
Same night, Alex Iwobi (a southerner) clinched the Youth Player of the Year award. The world watched in celebration of these boys and girls emerging millionaires at that age without a connection with
Abuja, or any Government House, or any Senator.
Its boys and girls like Oshoala, Iheanacho, Oghenekaro,
Iwobi, alongside Omawumi, Tonko D**e, D'banj, Iyanya,
Flavour, Olamide, Davido, Phyno, Timaya, Kiss Daniel in whom a region, Nigeria's south breaths competitive existence.
May we be troubled to lose sleep in the North until we wake up into the reality of today's world where innovation, technology, leadership drive growth.
FROM MR DIPO FAMAKINWA OF DAWN; SOUTH-WEST
One event in 2016 that I would not forget in a hurry was the Workshop on Economic Corridors and Growth Poles, organised by DAWN Commission, in conjunction with the World Bank. The Commission convened the Workshop for the States of Northern Nigeria in Abuja, while the States of Southern Nigeria converged on Lagos
At the Abuja Workshop, just as I did in Lagos, I made a presentation on the OneBloc organising concept for competitiveness in Western Nigeria. My position centred essentially on building a Southwest regional community to fast track our development and to achieve big and pervasive results faster, and in a more structured and predictable manner.
While my presentation was on, I noticed the changed demeanour of our brothers from the North, especially from the Northwest, but I continued hitting my point nevertheless. I had hardly rounded up my presentation, when all hell broke loose. Our friends, consisting of very senior government officials nearly ate me raw. They shouted and charged at me, accusing me and indeed the Southwest Nigeria of wanting to practice regionalism through the backdoor and considered our activities illegal and unconstitutional. They immediately renamed me Mr. OneBloc, and that stuck through the rest of the programme. One of my colleagues, who witnessed the whole drama, jocularly remarked that he now understood why they sometimes throw punches and chairs at one another in the National Assembly😀
Of course, I stood my grounds, and I also launched back at them in defence of my position, while also exposing their hypocrisy. I reminded them about how the Northern Governors had been creating joint economic programmes, making presentations all over the world about global support for the Northern Region.
Interestingly, I noticed that the guys from the North Central and the North East were more open. They were even willing to learn from our own example. And there once again, I saw Nigeria's fault lines and her soft underbelly, especially in terms of disparate opinions about the methodology for the country’s economic development.
While we in the Southwest are more sensitive to the classical requirements of Federalism - self rule and autonomy, and we are sensitive to the encroachment of those requirements, the North are more amenable to shared rule, albeit of a very lopsided nature. Unfortunately, the Nigerian constitution is favourable to one community, the 'majority', at the expense of others.
My conclusion is that we must continue to restate the fact that though Nigeria is a natural federal society, it has grossly inadequate measures of Federalism in it. And rather than make the call for true federalism as an insular ethnic conversation, we need to first and foremost present it as a development proposition.

GLOBAL CORPORATE LINKS{W.A.LIMITED} SETS UP LABOUR AND MAN POWER MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE.
This was made known by Dr Jola Okebiorun (Head of Corporate Structure and Management Development) during a brief at the online meeting of the members of Global Corporate Links Group this week.
She pointed out that many Nigerians have lost hope in Nigeria due to the condition and situation of labour market and the economy of the country that is at the worst state.
Under Global corporate Links Corporate structural development plan, labour and manpower is one of the areas through which we plan to create employment and to restructure the economy of Nigeria through our community economic development plan.
To establish a middle class for economic development in any country, a groomed and skilled labour force must be its solid foundation. Where this factor is missing, economic growth remains at a stunted level until a huge step to address this issue is taken. Otherwise, such a country cannot grow economically to compete at an international level.
THE ECONOMIC BENEFIT:
A middle class under a private sector is the economic-driven engine that boosts a country’s economy. This has to do with the people being fully engaged in each community, skilled labour can be created and restructured, the taxes they pay, and how they increase spending in each community will have positive economic effect as all other economic sectors also grow. They bridge the gap between the rich and poor. And with this wealth distributions and cultural value, many family members and friends get benefit economically.
Nigerian graduates need additional trainings to complement their initial education, this will make them to be more competitive in local and international labour market. More so,our agency will try as much as possible to make any employee from our agency to be effective, efficient, committed, productive and to be more job involved in anywhere they are employed. These and many more are the intentions of our organization.
She stated that the role of government in peoples' lives must be defined. ln advance countries the government (Federal,State and Local) are not the one to create jobs for the masses. Part of the government roles is to create a conducive environment for economic growth, create a support system such as export promotion and international trade shows, reduce the interest rate as well as providing incentives for any corporate body that has a plan for job creation.
She urged Nigerian professionals who have not been committed to job re-training for young graduates and prepare them for job market.
She also challenged the professionals in diaspora to bring those ideas they know and used to develop other country home; train Nigerians with modern technologies for the betterment of our dear country. So that any individual or company that needs their services can offer them jobs. For instance, solar panel technology is common in many countries, we have not used that to generate power for ourselves and our neighbours but seriously waiting for the government to provide us with basically everything.
She then listed the names of some Nigerians professional and academicians both at home and and abroad as the committee members for regulatory and governing of Global Corporate Links Group of agencies.
They are:

"To create a modern and advance grass root economic development that will have a positive impart in the life our our people, a system that stands the test of our time and the challenges which the people in our communities face daily; a formidable operational team must be established." This was the message passed across to the Global Corporate Links Officials that met in Ibadan few weeks ago by the Vice President of Global Corporate Links and the Head of Community Economic Development and Organizers, Mrs. Bolanle Akinsanya.
She appointed Miss Lamis Madaki as a Director in charge of Global Corporate Links Corporate Agents and Community Organizers all over Nigeria. Likewise, Mrs. Tosin Alaka was appointed as Director in charge of Community Economic Development and Corporate Agents Training while Miss Bisola Kafilat Hammed was appointed as Director in charge of Exhibitions and Trade shows.
Lagos is Nigeria’s melting pot. It’s the dream
destination for most people who reside in nearby
cities and rural communities. Everyone believes
Lagos is a city where dreams come true,
regardless of your means of livelihood. That’s
why you find almost everyone in this great
cosmopolitan city that is home to over 20 million
people, according to recent statistics. In fact, it
was estimated that Lagos might become over-
populated because of the high influx of migrants
from other states, and/or neighbouring countries.
This may be the reason why some Nigerians
refer to it as a no-man’s land, because it has
become a convergence point for all and sundry.
The journey to becoming a confirmed (true)
Lagosian is filled with many road bumps. Once
you’re strong-willed enough to cross, you will
earn yourself the title of a true Lagosian – a title
so lofty in glory. Some of these road bumps
might include your ability to survive the hustle,
the street food, the street life as well as having
an up-to-date understanding of the contemporary
slangs.
These slangs are essential because it is the way
most people communicate in the city, and being
able to decode and dialogue in these slangs will
make anyone a confirmed Lagosian. So, whether
you live on the Island or mainland, you should be
conversant with these slangs. Jumia Travel
shares five (5) of these contemporary slangs
that might earn you the confirmed Lagosian title:
Owambe
Owambe simply means social events held on
weekends, such as weddings. Lagosians love to
attend ‘owambes’ because it provides a unique
opportunity to mingle especially if you’re single;
you get to show off your colourful A*o Ebi, and
spend quality time with friends and family.
Interestingly, Owambe has outgrown its original
Yoruba connotation to become a cliche for
describing weekend social events among
Lagosians.
Okrika
Okrika is an Igbo phrase which is widely used to
describe cheap second-hand items sold at open
spaces. Okrika may include clothes, shoes, bags,
electronic devices and phones. A good number
of Lagosians patronise these items because they
are mostly affordable.
Shine your eyes
Because of the high number of residents, minus
frequent commuters who come into the city for
business functions, it is not surprising to find the
good, the bad, and the ugly cohabitating. Hence,
you have to constantly be on the alert if you
don’t want to experience the sneaky hands of
the bad eggs, because these hands strike faster
than lightning and thunder. So shine your
eyes while driving, standing at the bus stop, or
when engaging in any transactions.
Johnny Just Come (JJC)
Who is Johnny? Of course, Johnny is somebody’s
name. But it means something completely
different if you are addressed by that in Lagos.
JJC is someone that arrived recently in Lagos
and perhaps cannot navigate the city without a
guide. If your demeanour gives evidence of a
JJC, bus conductors are usually excited about
the prospect of taking advantage of you by
hiking the transport fare, or perhaps you may be
driven beyond your bus stop. There are some
people who can still be tagged Johnny even
though they’ve lived for years in the city. In any
case, do not act like a JJC if you want to be a
confirmed Lagosian.
Agbero
Agbero is a Yoruba word for bus conductors who
hail passengers. However, the name has
abandoned its original meaning and has
submitted itself to being used to
describe thugs who collect money from
commercial motorists for picking passengers at
the bus stops, and may resort to assault if the
money is being withheld by the drivers. Refusal
to pay this levy may lead to heated argument,
harassment or unnecessary delays. In fact,
passengers always encourage drivers to settle
these Agberos to avoid unnecessary
confrontations.
The concept behind COMETONIGERIA.COM
came up in order to let the whole world
rediscover the abundant wealth of opportunities
Nigeria has to offer and to encourage tourism
and its potential role as a major instrument for
socio-economic development. We believe that
by doing this, we will be able to open windows
of opportunity not only for the locals, but also
for the tourists for interaction and cultural
exchange.
Nigeria as a country is the most populous
country in Africa and the eighth most populous
country in the world with a population of over
140 million. Tourism is relatively a budding
enterprise in Nigeria but owing to Nigeria’s
potentials, it has undergone a gradual but
progressive evolution in the past three decades.
Nigeria is a country greatly endowed. It is
blessed with warm, sundry climate, over 800
kilometers of fascinating beaches and evergreen
vegetation in the South, while in the North,
alluring landforms overshadows savannah
grasslands. Added to these are the interesting
natural features in form of water falls, springs,
hills, some mountainous areas with temperate
like climate and a range of special and common
species of tropical wildlife.
These, coupled with wide market opportunities,
diverse socio-cultural heritage that gives the
nation its uniqueness and the hospitality of the
about 120 million people earn Nigeria the
sobriquet, GIANT OF AFRICA.It is almost
impossible to deny Nigeria its prime of place
amongst the richly endowed potential tourist
destinations in the world.
For these and other common reasons, we
decided to create an avenue through which
tourism in Nigeria would be properly and
extensively rebranded, thereby open up the gate
for tourists to come in.
COMETONIGERIA.COM is not an affliate of any
government ministry or private body but we wish
to work with everybody to promote Nigeria’s
