Here are some Tax Tips for Small Business Owners:
Stay Organized-As a small business owner it’s so important to be organized and stay organized. Keep track of miles driven for business throughout the year, have a system of tracking/recording all expenses, keep all business-related receipts and have them organized. When you file your schedule C, you want to make sure you don’t miss any expenses/deductions because you were unorganized.
Take Advantage of Tax Deductions-There are so many tax deductions available to a small business and its important to take advantage of those as they can help reduce your taxable income and, in some cases, even increase a tax refund.
Reduce your Risk of Audit-Make sure you only claim expenses that you can truly prove with a receipt/statement and never report expenses you cannot substantiate. Avoid reporting round numbers as this can be a red flag for audit. Stay consistent with what you report year to year and that expenses are consistent with your type of business.
Use a tax professional-You spend a lot of your time in business operations and making the money, a tax professional can make sure that you get all the deductions that are allowed to you and help prevent you from an IRS audit.
The IRS is open and Tax Season is well underway. We specializes in helping individuals and small businesses file their taxes. We will find all the deductions that can help you reduce your overall taxable income. Call 214-801-0576 for an appointment today.
A Tax Refund for most situations is an interest free loan you've given the government all year. If you receive a large tax refund, one wise thing to do is pay on or off debt or make extra mortgage payments. You will be surprised how much time additional mortgage payments can take off your loan and allow you to pay mortgage off early.
You are never going to see financial peace or freedom by being in debt and when you get lump sums of money, like tax season, this is the perfect time to move closer to eliminating debt!!!
Filing With Last Check Stubs:
You cannot file your tax return using your last paycheck stub and our office doesn't file any taxes without W2s. The reason is that it’s likely your last paycheck stub is incomplete. This could cost you more on the back end if you have to pay a tax preparer to amend your return and this can also delay your refund. By waiting a few extra weeks for your official W-2 you can file accurately and avoid any issues. It's fine to get estimates with the last paycheck stub, but not file.
The only time the IRS allows you to file using a last check stub is if the deadline for employers mailing out W2’s has passed, and you file a form 4852 along with the last check stub.
You can also ask your employer if they post W-2s online as you may be able to obtain it sooner.

It's great to take advantage of tax credits and if you own a business, tax write-offs. However, if you are consistently getting a large refund, you may want to also consider changing your tax withholdings on your job so that you take home more money throughout the year on your paycheck instead of giving the government an interest free loan on your money. In 2020, the W4 form changed and became easier for you to calculate tax withholdings from your check.
Also, some people are owing money at the end of the year because your job isn't taking out enough taxes based on your W-4 elections. Now is a good time to review those withholdings with your employer and make any necessary changes so in 2024 you take optimal advantage of the money you work hard to earn.
The IRS has announced that it will officially open and start accepting tax returns on January 29, 2024. Here are a few things you can do in preparation of that date:
1) Start analyzing your tax situation and deciding whether you need a tax preparer. Our firm specializes in helping both individuals and small businesses file taxes and minimize their tax liability as much as legally possible which can maximize your refund. We are currently accepting new clients.
2) Start getting organized. Start gathering all your tax documents (W2s, 1099s, 1098s, etc) as they come in so you have everything together and ready to file by that date.
3) If you have recently gotten married or moved, make sure that information is up to date with the IRS and Social Security Administration.
4) If you own a small business, take some time daily to start calculating your expenses, identifying expense categories, etc so you are ready when it's time to file.
We offer free consultations you can inbox me or call 214-801-0576 for a consultation today!!!

It is the end of January and if you haven't received your W2 from your employer, don't panic, follow these steps:
1) The IRS by law requires companies to send your W2 by Jan 31, therefore it could come any day now or this week. Also, check your email and spam. Some employers send out notifications that your W2 is available online.
2) Once it's well into February, and you still haven't received your W2, call your employer and speak to your Payroll or Human Resources Department. Ask them if and when it was mailed out and to what address? They could have the wrong address on file and your W2 was returned.
3) If you haven't received your W2 by February 15 and had no luck with your employer, contact the IRS @ 1-800-829-1040. On the call you will need your name, address, phone number, SS # as well as the employers name, address, phone number, dates you were employed, and estimated wages/taxes which you can get from your last paycheck stub. The IRS will contact your employer for you in attempt to get the W2 sent to you. They will also send you a form 4852 to use to file in replacement of a W2.
4) You must file your return or request an extension by April 18 regardless if you receive a W2 or not. If you are getting closer to the deadline or it appears you can't locate your W2 (company went out of business) then go ahead and file using the Form 4852. You will have to estimate the wages and taxes paid. Please note that filing without the W2 will delay processing of your return or refund.
5) If your W2 comes, but you've already filed using the Form 4852, you must file an amended return if there are any differences in what you reported on your return.
Form 4852, 1040X and instructions are available at http://www.irs.gov or calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676)
