Did you know students at UC Santa Barbara helped inspire the first Earth Day? đ
Joining local environmental activists, they created a grassroots group called Get Oil Out! (or GOO!) to pressure the government to stop drilling in the Santa Barbara Channel after a major oil spill in 1969. Inspired by the energy of these student protests, Senator Nelson of Wisconsin had the idea to bring public consciousness about air and water pollution. He recruited young activist Denis Hayes to help scale the idea to a broader public, choosing April 22nd to maximize student participation between spring break and final exams.
Happy , Gauchos!
