Florida shoe cobbler mends more than soles 04/28/2024

This is what Aprons are about. The people that wear them and their stories. Before everyone was holding a cell phone people did things, created things, grew food and needed an Apron. We all have a story to tell. May your story be good.

Florida shoe cobbler mends more than soles Jim McFarland, a fourth-generation shoe cobbler in Lakeland, Florida, never anticipated his trade mending shoes would lead to millions of views on social media. People are captivated by his careful craftsmanship: removing, then stitching and gluing soles on leather footwear. Across the country, some...

Great turnout and lots of fun at the Tishomingo Arts Council Food Poetry Competition 2023 held at the Apron Museum Courtyard in Iuka. Such a nice family gathering with food and food poetry. Wonderful to see so many young writers from Tupelo, Corinth and surrounding area. I loved the poems about Spam and Slug Burgers and family 4th of July Stew.

Food Poetry Competition 2023 was a great success Thursdsy night. See photos I just posted.

What memories spring to your mind if we bring up...

Breaking beans...
Shucking corn...
That special Sunday food your grandma knew was your favorite...
An ice cream cone you had to hurry on before it melted...
Not enough coffee...
Way too much wine...
Feeling the warmth of soup or stew settle in your belly and bring you back to life on a winter's day...

Food is more than nourishment for the body. Food and drink carry an enormous emotional connection to the moments in our lives that are the most communal... and the most solitary. A simple whiff of a dish can bring with it weighty recollections of people, places, and points in time that define who we are.

Tishomingo Arts Council, The Crossroads Poetry Project & Cats After Dark - Poet Society invite you to explore your own emotional connections through food with our Food Poetry Competition 2023 :)

This is our friend, Kevin Hoy, explaining Smart Apron. My family met Kevin in June 2019 when he gave a presentation at the Apron Symposium. Kevin described his experience designing, patenting, and getting the Smart Apron into full-scale production. Founded out of a desire to improve this common, utilitarian garment, Kevin combined Form AND Function into an awesome product.

I have been hearing about some interesting exhibits headed to the Old Courthouse Museum on September 2nd. Big day in Iuka, Mississippi. Think we sort of celebrate the thought of cool weather coming soon too.

My oldest Mississippi Cook Book. Not dated but with a little research I should be able to get an idea of when it was published. Great recipes inside asking for old ingredients like Snowdrift.

I had the pleasure this morning of talking on Mississippi Public Broadcasting Radio program Deep South Dining about the Apron Museum….and several other things connected through food. Thanks so much to Malcolm White, Carol Puckett and Java Chatman for inviting me to share the Museum with everyone. It was a wonderful surprise to be asked to talk.
Thought I would also post a little inspiration Poetry & Aprons for the Food Poetry Contest coming up at the Apron Museum which I mentioned this morning. The poem “A Toast” came out of the very old “Woman’s Club Cook Book Greenwood, Mississippi” that I talked about. Put on an Apron and cook something up tonight.
