What every plumber wants every home owner to know about their plumbing, in a nutshell:

• Leave your faucets dripping when the temps get down to freezing ❄️
• Stop pouring grease down the sink (now!) 🛑
• Only use natural cleaners instead of caustic when cleaning old pipes 👍
• Don’t cram stuff under the sink (consider only have a bucket under your pipes in case of leaks!) 🪣
• Don’t treat your garbage disposal like your trash can (especially avoid fibrous foods like celery and potatoes) 🗑
• Always call a professional for your major plumbing issues— don’t DIY this, ever! 🙅‍♂️
• Shut off your water valve before going on vacation 🏝
• Flush your water heater every year to clean out lime and deposits 💦
• Dont ignore water around the base of your toilet 💦
• Know how to check for leaks (if your bill is higher than usual, turn every thing off and watch your meter to check) 💧
• Don’t throw your trash in the toilet (!!!) 🚮🚫

As we celebrate Jackson’s Bicentennial, it is important to recognize and honor the role of small business in the growth of the community, especially during May’s Small Business Theme. In the early days itinerant peddlers traveled to downtown Jackson selling out of wagons and pushcarts, many setting up small stores—often referred to as the advent of the “mom and pop” shop. “We have come a long way, baby!” Here are just a few businesses that have survived the years and contributed so much to the Jackson small business community.

When Charles A. Garrett started this business in 1955, he wanted to provide high quality service and installation. This philosophy has been the foundation of their reputation and is one of the main reasons they have served some of their customers for over 60 years. Their goal is to provide high quality material and equipment as well as highly skilled professional mechanics for their customers and stand behind their work should a problem arise.

One of the reasons for their longevity is the importance of focusing on their reputation and quality of service and their understanding of the need to look after their customers. They have a computer system designed specifically for companies in the heating and air conditioning business. With this system, they are better able to track the service history and equipment information of their customers. Their operations is designed to result in better service for their customers.

These are some of our older businesses, along with 100s of other businesses, that we should honor for the many contributions they make to our community and to our economy. They show how businesses can survive generation after generation because of hard work, due diligence and taking pride in their efforts. The businesses in Jackson are so diversified and they are spread out from downtown to the south, north, east and west. In so honoring small business this month, let’s make sure we support them and shop local.

What a great time we had at the Friday Forum, where honored small businesses here in Jackson. We were excited to be recognized as one of the longest standing businesses in town, and are so proud of what this group is doing.
