Denny Burkes is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. He began collecting records at the age of six and playing drums in the school band at the age of nine. Immersed in his big sister’s record collection, mainly consisting of the likes of the The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, as an early teenager he discovered English punk and fell in love with the raw, live, organic aesthetic. Always a regular at the local independent record shops, it was mentors there who introduced him to the world of jazz as a teenager. Not long after, he heard Lee Morgan’s “The Sidewinder” on Jackson State’s jazz radio station (WJSU). This began a lifelong love affair with Blue Note Records.
