The indigenous people of the Northeastern and Southeastern woodlands have been here since time immemorial. Our individual tribal histories tell stories of our creation and the creation of all things. They tell of our migrations from one place to the next and how we ended up where we are today. Our Customs, Our Languages, Our Social and Sacred Dances all convey clearly who we are and what nation we come from. The hides we would wear, How we chose to wear those hides, The style in which we wore our hair, The style in which we sowed our moccasins and even the designs on the moccasins showed what nation we came from. Before the arrival of European Colonization we had many forms of "jewelry" and like our Customs, Dances and Language the things we adorned ourselves with had great meaning to us and great significance to those who saw us wearing them. The designs and styles in which we made our jewelry were pregnant with meaning and of even more importance were the materials we used to make them. Quahog Clams, Lightning whelks, Lettered Olives, Knobbed Whelks, Freshwater Mussels, Marginella shells etc were used for hundreds and sometimes thousands of year and are still used today. For some the significance behind the art has been lost. For some the reason for wearing the art has been lost. I would like to help bring that out to you.
