A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the annual back to school clothes for kids event. Dozens of kids have new clothing, shoes, etc to start their school year off right thanks to all who donated and volunteered. If you are unfimilar with this event our wonderful volunteers take kids shopping at Walmart. Each child was able to pick out several outfits as well as shoes and undergarments. A big thanks to Walmart for partnering with us once again.

Free festival planned for Tuesday, August 6

Special to The Source Newspaper

An annual event designed to bring together the community and first responders will return this year to Community Park in Jacksonville.

National Night Out (NNO) will be from 5:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the park, located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Main Street and Morton Avenue. Attendees should enter through the South Main entrance; drivers will be guided to parking spaces in grassy areas.

The free festival is part of a national event held annually on the first Tuesday of August. It is cosponsored by CrimeStoppers of Morgan, Cass and Scott counties and the Jacksonville Police Department Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni group.

First responders will be on hand from Jacksonville and South Jacksonville police and fire departments; Morgan County Sheriff’s Department; Illinois State Police; West Central Illinois 911 Dispatch; Morgan County Emergency Management Agency; Morgan County Coroner’s Office; and LifeStar Ambulance. Air Evac Lifeteam will have a static helicopter display.

Booths will be hosted by a number of local and countywide agencies. Activities and programs will include bounce houses, Ferris wheel rides, CPR practice, the fire department smoke house and police department drone and special response team displays.

Food and drink will be available for sale. No alcoholic beverages are allowed in the park, and younger children need to be accompanied by an adult.

National Night Out, founded in Pennsylvania in 1984, was designed as a meet-and-greet opportunity between community members and police; Jacksonville is among 195 Illinois communities and 17,000 cities nationwide to participate.

Join together on Friday, March 29 at 12 noon for the Jacksonville Area Conference of Church’s Good Friday Service. Speakers and participants from churches throughout the area will come together on this notable day in the Christian year.

The event is hosted by First Presbyterian Church at 870 West College in Jacksonville, Illinois, and will be simulcast on the First Presbyterian page.

This year, The message will be presented by 2 area pastors: Polly Pulley from Spirit of Faith Soup Kitchen, and Rev. Zachary D. Brooks of Trinity Episcopal Church.

A special addition to this year’s service is a sacred dance group from the St Louis Salvation Army, called Made to Worship. They will offer a special interpretation of Good Friday through movement and dance.
