Happy Labor Day from Polyhistor! It's been a busy summer, and we hope everyone enjoys the long weekend. We'll be back tomorrow, once again hard at work on developing and manufacturing our customer's exciting products.
At Polyhistor, we take pride in our efforts to always improve the customer experience, big and small. Many years ago, when we realized we had customers who were ordering parts on a predictable repeat basis, we realized reusable packaging would make their experience better. Not only did it reduce waste, it makes parts easier to unpack and helps us keep our costs down to help take a little bit off of our prices.

Here's a manufacturing tip: Undercuts are highly accurate, recessed features that aren’t machineable with typical straight tools. However, using keyway or lollipop cutters, Polyhistor can handle almost any undercut request!
Because undercuts can be incredibly challenging to machine, we advise engineers NOT to design complex features within undercuts.
If you have no choice but to place an intricate feature inside an undercut, take the time to consult with our product engineering team before finalizing your design.

Sometimes even our repeat customers aren't aware of the full array of services we have under one roof at Polyhistor. We're not just making parts with 3D printing, CNC machining, injection molding and more -- we also do extensive consultation on product design and prototyping.

We use poka-yoke techniques at Polyhistor.
What's poka-yoke, you might ask?
Poka-yoke is a Japanese term for “mistake-proofing” or “error-proofing” that serves as a guiding principle for manufacturers around the world.
At Polyhistor, poka-yoke inspires us to eradicate mistakes at the source so that we can consistently produce the highest quality parts and products for our customers. It’s just another way we’re always looking out for your best interest.

We regularly design for many manufacturing methods, including those we outsource to trusted vendors.
As a result, we can easily identify when a product would benefit from a particular method.
For example, we may call on our extrusion partner to extrude a part to its near-net shape. We'll then take the part and machine the critical, tight-tolerance features in-house. This approach is faster and more cost-effective than machining the part from scratch!

You know we offer product development services.
Did you know we also offer Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) services?
Polyhistor’s product development approach includes product design services that support your vision from your initial concept sketch to final delivery. Our one-stop precision machine shop has been helping high-tech innovators and product developers launch their products to market since 1999.
But what happens when you have a great idea but your design isn’t fully optimized for streamlined manufacturing and assembly? That’s when our engineers jump in with DFM and DFA guidance.
Polyhistor’s renowned product design services emphasize DFM and DFA to bridge the gap between what you can design in CAD software and what’s possible on the shop floor and on the assembly line.

In addition to speed and precision, one of the reasons our precision machine shop loves laser cutting is that it allows for incredible flexibility compared to alternative methods like die cutting.
Die cutting involves custom tooling. It's a great solution for high volumes of parts with finalized designs.
But if you need a low volume of parts or anticipate mid-production revisions, laser cutting is a much more cost-effective approach. Setup is fast and easy for low volumes, and in the event of revisions, we can adjust the machine’s programming and continue with production.

If you don't want to choose between a high-quality product and one that is low cost, read this.
Cost reduction plays an important role in our customers' success and weighs heavily in every step of our process: from initial design through production.
A large portion of the cost to produce a product is directly related to how it is designed, assembled, and packaged.
Using principles of Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacture (DFM) can, in most cases, drastically reduce overall costs and increase profits.

Our precision machine shop is always seeking innovative and creative solutions to manufacturing challenges, so it’s not surprising that we’ve found some interesting ways to use our laser cutters.
We'd give some of the examples now, but we'd rather show you on the blog. 😁

One of the simplest ways to reduce the overall cost of an assembly is to limit the number of individual components involved.
Of course, you probably already knew that!
Still, this might seem easier said than done.

Plastics are more pliable than metals, which means they can shift more easily during machining.
This movement can hinder accuracy and repeatability!
Thin walls, in particular, can pose a challenge—especially if they are also deep. For example, thin walls that are 2” deep are more prone to weakness than thin walls that are only 0.25” deep.

Manufacturing is NOT a "one-size-fits-all" process.
Why?
Because manufacturing isn’t a singular process; it’s an ever-evolving series that can vary greatly from shop to shop. Their capabilities, machines, tooling, specialists, certifications, and more play a role in the way your prototype will be created.
If you plan on developing a product, you'll want to read this.

One of the best ways to produce parts quickly and cost-effectively is to make as many parts as possible in a single setup.
Fixturing solutions help shops achieve this goal.
For optimum efficiency, we make our own fixtures right here in our shop—a service that could add weeks to your lead time if we had to outsource it.
We further enhance our efficiency by making and loading multiple fixtures to minimize machine downtime and utilizing an automatic fixture detection system that assists in reducing operator errors.
These simple yet effective steps keep our high-volume production machining projects moving seamlessly!
