"Practical" Thinking About Golf

We are big fans of Jon Sherman of practical-golf.com and he doesn’t disappoint with his recent blast that had a thought-proving idea that is quite frankly a little counter-culture.

Jon believes that golf can create a “paradox of choice”. There are just so many options when it comes to different targets, shot types, and club selections. Quite frankly, it is mind-blowing especially when all we are really trying to do is get a little white ball into a very small hole hundreds of yards away. It literally can be overwhelming.

Jon thinks that simplifying the game and pursuing fewer types of shots just might be the path to lower scores for most amateur players. And make the game more enjoyable. Removing indecision and focusing on your strengths are indeed the key to your success. Having 1 - 2 stock shots and simplifying your target (aim for the center of the green) can yield great results for a majority of players.

Yes, this is probably at odds with how some golfers want to play but with limited time to practice properly and play, sometimes LESS is more. Golf is not a game that allows us to have our cake and eat it too when it comes to scoring. And don’t forget this isn’t your career; this is a game to enjoy. So why not play the style of game that is most enjoyable for you? Less stress is more fun and often rewarding.

Included in Jon’s blast was this simple little tidbit about hitting on the range….Put the balls BEHIND you. Every time you go back there to get a ball, make sure you pick your target and visualize it. And then you have to realign yourself. (When you just pull another ball from in front, you often won’t change position.) By putting the balls behind you, it forces you to get a new target and realign for it.
