❤️Powerful encouragement from Courage Counseling & Consulting LLC! We are so thankful to have Courage Counseling & Consulting LLC at The Willow Project!❤️

I talk to a lot of discouraged young people in my work. Many of them believe on some level that they are not enough or don't have what it takes. Our culture sends subtle messages to all of us that we have to be perfectly attractive, perfectly brilliant, perfectly skilled, or universally accepted by others in order to be worth anything. We all have felt the pressure of these messages and we all respond to the pressure in different ways. When 'perfect' is the goal, anxiety and discouragement are the logical outcomes. We will either 'hustle' to be as perfect as possible or we will feign helplessness/incompetence, refusing to change or grow.

As parents, family members, teachers, and "village member's" it is important that we combat the perfection mindset in the young people we care about. Instead, we want to help cultivate a growth mindset. A growth mindset does not expect perfection out of self or others and believes that abilities and knowledge can be developed through consistency, learning, and practice. It focuses on the process of growth rather than the outcome of perfection.

Growth mindsets are cultivated through encouragement from others, experiences of success as the result of dedication and practice, and a helpful perspective on failure. When a child fails or does not get something right, our response is of great importance. Responses that support the development of growth mindsets focus on the courage it takes to try something new, the great effort the child has put forth, and the hope of improvement through practice and learning.

"Everyone struggles with something new sometimes."

"You have worked really hard at this and you have really improved since the first time!"

"Wow! It takes a lot of guts to try something you know you can't get perfect!"

"Practice makes progress!"

Take courage!

What is child led play and why do we use this approach? Play is how children learn about themselves and their environment. Child led therapy follows the child’s lead and their interest. When we honor a child’s play and follow their lead we establish a relationship of trust and connection! Trust has to be built before language will be accepted by the child!

It is so easy to get overwhelmed when talking to an overwhelmed person. Have you ever had an interaction with someone where you "caught" the other person's feeling? If we aren't careful we can get emotionally bogged down in things that are neither our responsibility nor within our control. Here are a few tips for taking to an anxious or irate person.

1)Remain calm! That's right, take a deep breath. Soften your heart to care about the person's concern while remembering that you are not responsible for their life or feelings.

2)Express empathy! Don't start with problem solving as this often intensifies a person's resistance to calming down. Statements such "you are really overwhelmed right now", "this is all really scary for you to think about", and "gosh, that's frustrating" go a long way toward reassuring the person that they are not alone.

3)Seek to engage their whole brain! The section of the brain responsible for intense feelings of anger and fear is called the Lymbic system. One of the many jobs of this system is the "fight or flight" responses of the nervous system to danger. An important insight here is that anxious and irate people are, at the root, feeling unsafe. (this is why empathy from tip two is so helpful) The challenge with the fight or flight response however is that when the limbic system is activated the higher order parts of the brain responsible for reasoning and planning go offline. In other words, anxious and irate people are literally not able to think clearly. This is why you NEVER try to have a deep discussion or plan for the future with a person in this state. What you can do is try to guide their attention to relevant facts and reassuring details. Calmly stated facts with empathy can help the anxious or irate person reconnect with the "smartest" parts of their brains.

Take courage!

✨Checkout how No Limits Therapy, at The Willow Project, is creating treatments specific to your child’s needs & interests.✨

In pediatric occupational therapy, we work to improve a child’s motor and cognitive skills, self-regulation, and sensory processing to improve independence in daily “occupations.”

For adults, daily occupations may include working, cooking, driving, or managing a home. While children have other occupations, such as being a student, completing chores, getting dressed, their main occupation is PLAY!

At NLT, we help to build your child’s skills by providing individualized treatment strategies centered around your child’s play interests.

For example, the child in this video loves music! Therefore, we provided a treatment activity tailored to that interest to improve his participation. He wanted to do this activity for almost 10 minutes! We were able to work on fine motor skills, following directions, attention and coordination, which he needs for not only engaging in play but his other occupations as well!
