Just in time for the weekend, cherry trees in Washington DC have reached peak bloom! The blooming of the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin has come to symbolize the natural beauty of our nation's capital city. The famous trees, a gift of Japan in 1912, signal Washington's beginning of spring with an explosion of life and color that surrounds the Tidal Basin in a sea of pale pink and white blossoms.

You can help us preserve cherry trees! Protecting trees happens at the roots, branches, and blossoms. Leaving blossoms on the trees - even on the ground! - is critical for the tree's interactions with pollinators like bees. Being gentle with the branches by not swinging or climbing keeps the trees strong and whole. Walking around roots keeps the soil loose enough for water to absorb, and protects the tree's roots.
