LINK IN BIO❤️FREE SHOW! An evening with Matthew Mercury in the dreamy and gorgeous Dibden Center for the Arts!

"Matthew Mercury is a story. A story about keeping the light on and having a vision. Matthew Mercury pays homage to the feeling of New York narratives a la Lou Reed, punctuated by Television-like guitar signatures, while making a detour out to the earnest romance of Springsteen's darkened trestles, all the while genuflecting to the artistry of Brill Building-esque hooks. Born out of a songwriting and production partnership between Matt Dublin and Ezra Oklan, Matthew Mercury aims to celebrate stories threaded into catchy choruses with an overall pop delivery that no healthy person can resist. What can I say about these guys that won't sound like more swirling arpeggios of sophistry, except play their sound. Loud. You will understand. And don't get mad if they get stuck in your head and turn your light on too."

Our department production, The Thanksgiving Play, opens tonight at 7pm! Polaris Performance Company has been hard at work all semester long. See our event for more details!

In Larissa Fasthorse’s play, she gleefully skewers both the popular mythology of the American Thanksgiving holiday and the performative wokeness that can trip up white allies in their quest to “do better”. While her satire is merciless, her characters still benefit from her kindness. The four theatre artists she imagines struggling to reconcile historic injustices with a positive educational agenda are good people with egos and insecurities. They are familiar and fallible. Just like us.

Double Feature Creative Audience!
Join us for a lecture from Meg Mott, at Dibden Center for the Arts on 3/16 at 7PM, followed by a screening of the film: 1984 at 8PM.

"The First Amendment prevents Congress from passing any laws that abridge the freedom of speech. But what does that actually mean? In this presentation, professor Meg Mott considers the history of speech laws in the United States, how states and municipalities have tried to curb offensive speech, and how the Supreme Court has ruled on those efforts.

She’ll also discuss how speech fits into the life cycle of our democracy. While some argue that limits on speech are necessary for marginalized persons to feel welcome in the public sphere, others argue that the criminalization of speech serves the needs of the penal state more than the general public.

All arguments are welcome as we make full use of our reasoning powers to bring the First Amendment to life!" -from https://www.vermonthumanities.org/free-speech-hate-speech/
